Cornelius Otto Jansen was born in Acquoi, Netherlands. He held many high positions in the Roman Catholic church but his book on Augustine was eventually condemned. He had taught that Augustine's positions were opposed to the teachings of the Jesuits. Blaise Pascal defended the Jansenists in his famed Provincial Letters.
