Relationships are important to God as well as to us. We seek connection with the divine and others, from family to friends. In such a corrupt world, however, we often encounter conflict and division in relationships, and we quickly realize we don’t know what to do or how to move forward.
Therefore, we pray for wisdom in our relationships. James 3:17 says, “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” Our connections with people can bring us both great joy and challenge. Without God’s wisdom, we easily react in anger, pride, or selfishness. In this prayer, we seek for God to shape our hearts with his character, responding in love. From that purity and love, we seek peace and reconciliation instead of conflict. With peace as the goal, we act gently, mercifully, and patiently.
Without God’s wisdom, even small misunderstandings grow into major conflicts. But when he gives his motives and guidance, we can respond with grace for more grace. Wisdom shows us when to listen and speak, when to set boundaries, and when to forgive. With this, we more likely build relationships to honor the Father and reflect his love.
Heavenly Father,
I ask you for wisdom in my relationships. Teach me to be peaceable, gentle, and merciful. Help me love others as you love me. Guide my words and behavior with your Holy Spirit.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
