Prayers for Financial Breakthrough (For When You Feel Stuck)

Money is important in this world, but we need to keep it in its place. Money is a tool to use to glorify God, but we are often tempted to idolize money when we focus on what other people have. When we keep the right attitude about money, we can be better stewards of it. Here are some prayers to help us maintain a godly attitude toward money:

Father, help me to keep my eyes on the things that matter to You, things of eternal importance. Keep me from being led astray by the worldly desires (Matthew 6:21).

Father, I know that wealth will never satisfy me. Only You can give me what I truly need (Ecclesiastes 5:10)

Father, help me to remember that only You deserve my love so that I can keep money in its right place in my life (Hebrews 13:5).

Father, help me learn to be content where I am and not focus on what others may possess. (Philippians 4:11).

Every time we face a financial crisis or situation, our first response is usually to try to figure out what we can do to fix it. The truth is that God owns everything and anything we have is a blessing from Him. Worldly riches can go as quickly as they come. Only God is worthy of our trust. Here are some prayers to refocus our hearts and minds on the source of our financial blessings.

Lord, I do not put my hope in wealth because it is fleeting, but I ask for you to be at work in my financial situation and to bring about a good end. You alone are worthy of my trust, and you are faithful to provide for your children (1 Timothy 6:17-19).

Lord, your word tells me that you feed the birds and clothe them and that your children are more important to you than the birds, so I ask for your provision in my daily life because you know all that I need (Matthew 6:26). 

Lord, you have promised to provide for all my needs. Help me to know the difference between my wants and needs. I know you are a loving father who provides for his children and not a genie in a bottle who gives into our whims (Philippians 4:19).

Why do you want a financial breakthrough? Everyone wants to be financially stable, which is not a bad thing to desire. However, we do need to take a closer look at our purpose in having more money. God calls us to be good stewards by giving to the church so that His Body can reach out to others and provide help to those in need that He puts in our path. Those things can bring us more joy than any worldly possession ever can. Here are some prayers to have the right purpose with our finances and to steward our material possessions well and in service to others. 

Lord, however you bless me, I will bring my tithe to the storehouse so that it can be used to bless the house of God as it overflows into our community. Please take it and multiply it to your glory (Malachi 3:10).

Lord, I will bring my first fruits, whether it be money, time, or energy to you because you have given me everything that I have. Help me to use them for your glory (Proverbs 3:9).

Lord, I pray that you will bless me abundantly so that I have all I need to abound in every good work that you have for me (2 Corinthians 9:8).

Finally, when we pray for God to bless us monetarily, we need to be willing to do the work required for such a blessing. We should do everything as if to the Lord, including how we do our jobs. We should be thoughtful in how we steward that blessing, and we should be grateful and remember to give thanks to God for what he has given us.

Father, help me to be a hard worker who patiently gathers little by little and watches as you make it grow because in steady work there is joy and satisfaction (Proverbs 13:11).

Father, help me to be diligent in doing the work you have given me to do. Let me not fall prey to laziness so that I may receive your blessings (Proverbs 10:4).

Father, before I try to take on a new project, help me remember to count the cost to make sure that the final product is worth the energy and money to see it to completion (Luke 14:28).

There is nothing inherently wrong with money. It is a means of commerce in our world as we use it to sell our goods and services so that we can gain the things we need to live. The problem is when money becomes more important than anything else. Money will not save us, and it certainly will not love us. God wants us to have what we need, but he often does not give us what we want because He knows it will hurt us in the end. So, we need to trust him by placing our needs before him in prayer and letting him decide the best way to meet them.

Many people have been drawn to the Prayer of Jabez (1 Chronicles 4:10) as a template for praying for a financial breakthrough. However, too many people have approached it as a mantra to be repeated over and over, expecting wealth from merely repeating the verses. Instead, the prayer is an example of asking for God’s blessing as it pleases Him. God knew Jabez would use his blessings to glorify God, so he granted Jabez’s request. 

The following scripture passage gives a helpful summation of how we should pray about money:

Give me neither poverty nor riches—
 Feed me with the food allotted to me;
 Lest I be full and deny You,
And say, “Who is the Lord?”
 Or lest I be poor and steal,
 And profane the name of my God. 

(Proverbs 30:8-9)

God knows our needs, and he also knows what is best for us. So, let us pray like this proverb that we may learn to be content with where we are, but always willing to share with others so that God may be glorified. Amen and amen.
