Powerful Prayers for Those Struggling with Addiction

Around 49 million Americans over the age of 12 battle a substance use disorder. Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance; drug use is climbing, driven by opioids and fentanyl. Addiction is contributing to huge economic and healthcare burdens. 

What is not captured in these statistics is the people outside of the individuals struggling who are impacted by substance abuse. Families, children, friends, healthcare workers, the criminal justice system, child protective services, and so much more feel the burden of loss caused by addiction. 

In our own home, we have three adopted children who are here because of addiction. They each have the burden of lifelong grief because their relationship with their birth family has been forever fractured due to dependence on substances. Each of our kids is physically impacted by substance exposure. More and more children are living separately from their birth parents and end up in the foster care system due to addiction. I often observe my own grief, lamenting that their first mom does not know the joy of seeing them learn a new skill, laugh, or enjoy something new. The loss experienced in these stories because of addiction is immeasurable. God’s grace has allowed my kids to know safety and love, but we are living in a gap. 

As we see more people and families struggle with the impacts of addiction, more action and support is needed. We must prayerfully ask God to show us how to support those struggling and protect those who need support due to the losses that addiction has caused in their life. More kids need foster homes, jails need faith-based programs that lead those who are stuck to Jesus, and more creative solutions need to be put in place to help curb the impacts of addiction in our country. Jesus cares for the brokenhearted. He cares about those who are impacted by addiction, and we can always go to him in prayer about this.

What Does the Bible Say about Addiction? 

Addiction is not just a modern problem. We see in Scripture warnings against being mastered by anything other than Christ. While Scripture doesn't use today's clinical language, it repeatedly warns against being mastered by anything other than Christ. Humans are called to worship God, not our cravings. Our bodies are a temple that is designed for worship; we have to guard it from things that would distract us from reality. Sin entices and offers temporary pleasure but quickly entangles us. Sin can quickly consume our lives. Thankfully, Jesus came to set us free from the power of sin and death. There is always hope with Jesus. 

Scriptures about Addiction

  • John 8:36 - So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:12 - Everything is permissible for me—but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me—but I will not be mastered by anything.
  • Galatians 5:1 - It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
  • Romans 6:16 - Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

 

Prayer is Powerful for Addiction Recovery 

Prayer has the power to change lives! When we go to God seeking his guidance, healing, and redemption, we are reminded by the Holy Spirit that we are not alone. The Spirit is our comforter and guide. We need the help of the Holy Spirit to strengthen us against temptation. Our fight is not against flesh and blood but against rulers and powers of the darkness (Ephesians 6:12). 

Prayer is our direct line to God, allowing us to remain connected to His presence. As we push towards freedom from addiction for ourselves or our loved ones, prayer, alongside counseling, recovery support, and treatment, is powerful.

James 5:16 declares, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” 

A Prayer for Someone Struggling with Addiction 

Psalm 51:1-2 

Have mercy on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
    blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
 and cleanse me from my sin.

Father, I come before you humbly, asking that you would help steps to be taken towards freedom from addiction. You know my heart; you see the sin and trap that has been laid by the enemy. I know that you alone have the power to bring freedom. I surrender this story to you, asking that you do the things that I cannot. Give the courage required to get the help needed to change habits. Help me to trust in your mercy and goodness. Amen. 

A Prayer against Temptation 

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Father, go before me, guarding me from any traps that would lead me back into my addiction. Renew my mind each day, setting my thoughts on things above. Free me from fixating on things that are not good for my mind, body, or soul. Give me the strength I need to stay faithful to your way. Remind me of your promises when I feel tempted. I know your way is better. Amen.

A Prayer for Addiction Relapse 

Lamentations 3:22-23

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
    for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.

Father, you knit me together in my mother's womb. You know everything about my story. You made me with a plan and purpose for my life. You love me no matter what. Let that truth rub away any shame that my addiction has placed into my life. Let your grace be the force that ushered me back into your presence. Forgive me for my sin. Continue to set me free from addiction. Keep me close in the palm of your hand. Protect my life. Help me to cling to the things that keep me safe and free, such as accountability, therapy, and support. I need you, Jesus. Amen. 

A Prayer for Loved Ones Struggling with Addiction

Isaiah 41:10 - So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Father, you know the ones I love and the battles they are facing. Don’t forget them. Don’t stop drawing them away from addiction. Protect them from harm, from the evil one. Soften their heart, lead them towards freedom. Bring people into their lives that will be agents of light and hope in their stories. Give strength and grace to those around them. Offer wise words to those who are trying to reach them. Protect others from the impacts of their addiction. Bring grace and redemption to their stories. Amen. 

A Prayer for Families Affected by Addiction

Colossians 3:13

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

God, I lament the losses caused by addiction. I know you hold the tears of those struggling and impacted by addiction and carry us through the grief felt in these stories. I ask that you would bring healing to relationships that are broken by addiction. Offer protection and grace in relationships. Allow forgiveness, so bitterness does not build up in our hearts. Make a way for trust to be restored, healthy boundaries to be put in place. Provide your wisdom for every person impacted by addiction. Amen. 

A Prayer for Recovery and Lasting Freedom from Addiction

2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here!

Father, I pray that you would walk with me every day on this journey of recovery. Provide the perseverance needed to live with lasting freedom. Show me how to implement healthy habits and boundaries that will keep me from temptation. Give me the godly friendships and support I need. I thank you for the joy I have in Christ and the purpose you offer for my life. Help me to grow in my faith and cling to you every day for all that I need. Amen. 

Addiction is powerful, but it is not more powerful than God. He loves every person, even when they are battling addiction. He wants to reach them in their struggles and free them from the trap of addiction. God never stops pursuing us! 

Recovery is often one faithful step at a time. Each prayer, act of repentance, and moment of choosing God’s strength over destructive habits is a win. Keep praying and seeking help. God can redeem our stories.
