Fighting Fear with Faith as News of a Hantavirus Outbreak Sparks Panic

Key Points

  • Outbreak news can quickly trigger fear, anxiety, and doom-scrolling, especially in a post-pandemic world.
  • Christians are called to respond to health concerns with wisdom, compassion, discernment, prayer, and peace.
  • Trusting God does not mean ignoring risk; believers can take responsible health precautions while resting in His sovereignty.
  • Scripture reminds believers that God is present in every crisis and offers peace that can guard anxious hearts and minds.
  • When alarming headlines arise, Christians can seek reliable information, avoid rumors, care for the vulnerable, and trust God for wisdom.

On May 2nd, a group of travelers aboard a cruise ship reported severe respiratory illness. At the time of the reported illness, 147 passengers were onboard the ship, and 34 had already left. As of May 8, a total of 8 cases have been reported, and six have been laboratory-confirmed as the hantavirus, and there have been three deaths. The WHO has stated the risk to the global population of infection is low, but will continue to monitor the situation and update the risk assessment.

What Is Hantavirus, and Why Are People Concerned?

Human Hantavirus is mainly acquired through contact with the urine, feces, saliva, or contaminated surfaces of an infected rodent. Officials believe those who have the virus most likely contracted it during activities in Argentina. Current evidence points to human-to-human transmission while onboard the cruise ship.

In our post-pandemic world, headlines around this disease can quickly trigger anxiety, panic, and endless doom-scrolling. We know all too well how easily a seemingly distant threat of illness can quickly become an imminent danger that has the power to upend our lives. As Believers, we are called to neither panic nor ignore danger. We are invited by God to respond with wisdom, compassion, discernment, and peace. For Christians, news of an outbreak should neither lead to panic nor to denial, but to prayerful wisdom, responsible action, compassion for those affected, and renewed trust in God’s sovereignty.

Why Outbreak News Can Trigger Fear and Anxiety

Outbreak news impacts us so deeply as we all are living with a not-too-distant memory of how COVID-19 swept through our world, causing massive lockdowns, taking many lives, and disrupting the entire world. Not to mention, humans are wired to react strongly to threats of sickness or death. Our 24-hour news cycle and the constant availability of social media only serve to amplify our fear. Our constant exposure to alarming headlines and varied news reports often distorts our sense of danger, leading to more anxiety than ever experienced before by humanity.

The culture of fear, constant alarm, and panic impacts our spiritual lives. Fear robs us of our peace, distracts us from the mission God has given us, and can lead to our isolation. When we are being fed a constant stream of scary news, our fight or flight system starts to be constantly activated, leading to chronic anxiety, which can impact our ability to rest. Fixating on what can go wrong in our stories can grow a heart of paranoia and suspicion towards others. Living in constant fear makes it hard for us to trust God. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us,

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Thankfully, this verse reminds us that we have been invited to live differently from the culture. We can step away from the constant fear cycle and instead live without anxiety because we bring every situation to the Lord when we pray. When we do this, God helps guard our peace, and he guides us towards his truth. Ultimately, the Lord alone numbers our days, and as long as we are obedient to his leading in our lives, we can live in peace.

God Is Present During Health Crises

God’s presence does not disappear during a health crisis. God is with us in all things; there is nothing that can separate us from the love of Christ! As Christ followers, we can acknowledge danger when we observe it, but we don’t have to give in to panic. Here are some key verses we can cling to when anxiety wants to creep in:

  • Isaiah 41:10: So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you;  I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
  • Psalm 46:1-2: God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.
  • Zephaniah 3:17:The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

How Christians Can Respond to Outbreak News Wisely

As we confront the headlines and how they may impact our lives, we have to ask the Lord to guide us with his wisdom. James 1:5 reassures us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” The Holy Spirit is the only safe guide we have!

During COVID, the headlines, advice, and expert opinions changed so much that it became impossible to figure out how to handle the situation, relying solely on others' advice. Christians had to seek the Lord's guidance on the wise steps they should take to care for themselves and their families. As we respond to outbreaks, taking basic health precautions is a wise way to steward life. Jesus modeled compassion and wisdom when he interacted with the sick and suffering. He cared for those who were unwell and did not spread hysteria. He acted calmly and with compassion at every turn. We can do the same by balancing courage with responsibility as we face medical risks and uncertainty.

9 Practical Ways We Can Navigate Outbreak News

  1. Stay informed through reliable sources; do not doomscroll.
  2. Practice good personal habits to keep your risk of exposure minimal.
  3. Avoid sharing the rumors online, don’t get caught up in the hysteria.
  4. Take steps to care for the vulnerable in your family and community.
  5. Enlist the help of medical professionals when necessary.
  6. Limit your obsessive intake of news.
  7. Investigate before reacting; not every headline is true!
  8. Avoid conspiracy-driven fear
  9. Pray often and ask God to show you his peace and to give you wisdom as we live in a dangerous, ever-changing world!

Peace Comes from Trusting God in Uncertain Times

Our hope is first and foremost in God’s sovereignty. Psalm 20:7 declares, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” Medical science is a great tool and helps relieve so much suffering, but at the end of the day, we trust in the Lord as the sustainer and guide for our lives. God is a faithful God! Over the course of human history, he has brought people through wars, plagues, famines, and disasters! He has been the help of every generation, and he will not fail us. Even in death, the Christian has the hope of Heaven; the best is yet to come. This is why we can live in peace at all times: we have a blessed assurance that God is making a way for us.

Jesus spoke directly about troubled times. During the life-threatening storm, Jesus commanded the disciples to take courage and not be afraid! (Mark 6:50) Christians are called to endurance and faithfulness. We never respond with panic because we know God is always with us, but we can live with preparedness, ready to hold onto the peace of Christ through whatever storm life brings our way. While news of hantavirus can be triggering, we are reminded by God’s word that He is trustworthy and that his peace surpasses all understanding. When fear rises, we do not have to be ruled by the loudest headline; we can be led by the God who gives wisdom, guards our hearts, and teaches us how to love others well. Christians respond to the headlines by asking God for wisdom, praying for peace, showing compassion for those impacted, and trusting God through it all. In every alarming headline, Christ remains our source of peace, wisdom, and steady hope.
