We’ve all heard it—or maybe even said it ourselves:

“I’m just anxious.”
 â€śIt’s just how I am.”
 â€śMy brain won’t stop overthinking.”

Our brains are brilliant prediction machines. They’re constantly working to identify patterns and create automated responses so that we can function efficiently. You’re Not Weak—Your Brain Is Doing What It Was Trained to Do

Let me be clear: anxiety is not your fault. It’s not a failure of faith or willpower. It’s a sign that your brain is doing its job—but in a way that’s no longer serving you.

When we get stuck in anxious loops, our brain’s alarm system (the amygdala) becomes hypersensitive. It starts sending distress signals more frequently, activating the fight-flight-freeze response—even in situations that don’t warrant it. At the same time, your prefrontal cortex (the part responsible for rational thinking and decision-making) is hijacked.

This creates what I call a mental traffic jam: You feel overwhelmed, foggy, reactive, and stuck. But you’re not broken. You’re just running an outdated thought script. And you can rewrite it.

Step One: Recognize the Loop

The first—and most powerful—step to breaking a toxic thought loop is simply recognizing that you’re in one. You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge.

So often, anxiety is made worse by our resistance to it. We try to suppress the feelings, distract ourselves, or shame ourselves for “still being anxious.” But those strategies only reinforce the loop. Instead, we need to slow down and get curious. When you feel anxious, try asking:

-What triggered this thought?
-What pattern do I notice here?
-Is this a familiar story my brain tells me when I feel uncertain or unsafe?

Bringing awareness to the loop pulls you out of autopilot and engages your conscious mind—the part of you that can choose how to respond. This is where your power begins.
