Key Points
- Measles outbreaks and changing vaccine guidance have left many parents anxious about how to make wise decisions for their children.
- Christian parents can seek medical counsel and reliable information without allowing fear to become their master.
- God’s wisdom may not remove every hard decision, but it can free parents from panic, pride, and the illusion of control.
- Trusting God with our children does not mean refusing responsibility; it means acting humbly while remembering they ultimately belong to Him.
- Parents teach their children how to navigate fear by the way they seek wisdom, ask questions, pray, and surrender outcomes to God.
A man in the Publix parking lot caught me red-handed, having a messy, snotty meltdown in my car. Of course, he’ll never know why it was barely noon, and I was already emotionally spent for the day, but if he’d asked, I would’ve said: “I’m tired of living in fear, and I’m tired of never knowing what to do concerning my children and vaccines.”
This morning, my son had his three-year-old checkup, which typically wouldn’t require any decisions regarding vaccines. However, I learned today that my eastern Tennessee town is smack in the middle of Nashville and Asheville, two large cities that recently had measles outbreaks. I was given the choice to vaccinate my son a year early with his second dose, or wait.
I have a cousin who suffered a vaccine injury, and I didn’t receive a certain vaccine, caught the virus the vaccine would’ve likely thwarted, and had to have conversations about cancer prevention at just 24 years old.
I’ve seen both sides. I’ve read both sides. I’ve researched both sides. There is no “right” answer, no “right” schedule regarding vaccination. Whether you don’t vaccinate, delay vaccines, or receive them all, there are risks outside your control.
Why Are Vaccine Decisions So Heavy for Parents?
To gamble your own health is one thing. To gamble with our child’s health, no matter which route you take, is a much weightier matter.
My fear isn’t unique, though. Many parents are facing this challenge, and it’s gaining national headlines as President Trump and RFK Jr. push changes to childhood vaccine recommendations. This raises a deeper question than partisan health policy: whom do families trust when children’s safety is at stake?
Furthermore, whom do Christian families trust concerning their children’s well-being
How Can Christian Parents Pursue Wisdom Instead of Panic?
James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
I’ll admit I get frustrated with God easily because His wisdom isn’t always a direct answer. It offers truth and guidance, but it doesn’t send a vaccine schedule to my mailbox with a heavenly postage stamp.
Instead, God’s wisdom offers an opportunity, a free choice to leave panic behind and pursue a life not controlled by fear.
That’s hard when your children could face the repercussions of your decision, but, as far as statistics are concerned, it’s a 100% guarantee that they will learn how to navigate fear by your example.
If you’re a slave to fear, they will bow to it too.
If you surrender your fear to heaven’s wisdom, you’ll find God’s throne is for the imperfectly hopeful and the brave, too.
Consider these verses for encouragement:
Genesis 18:19: "For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just..."
Psalm 78:4: "We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done."
How Can Parents Choose Trust When the Fear Feels Loud?
I’ll be honest. Trust isn’t fun. I’m quite certain that’s why Scripture lists it as a necessary characteristic of love: “It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” (1 Corinthians 13:7).
Often, we struggle to trust others, even God, because someone has broken our trust. We loved them enough to be most vulnerable with them, to trust them with the worst of us, so when they broke that trust, it left us afraid to ever experience such intimacy again.
This is why trust is a choice. We don’t stumble into trusting someone; we choose to trust them. It’s a habitual act of vulnerability, opening yourself up to someone so they can know you in your entirety. Love requires that we open ourselves up to God and others (who aren’t perfect, but won’t abuse our trust).
What Does Trusting God with Our Children Really Mean?
Frankly, I don’t trust the government. I don’t fully trust doctors. I don’t trust anyone to take care of my babies better than me… and that’s my problem: I believe I can better protect my babies than their Maker.
I have a trust problem, which makes me so susceptible to the tyranny of both the pro- and anti-vaccine communities. I’m unwilling to commit to either, so I’m overwhelmed with the threats, stats, and sweeping generalizations of them all.
God has never been tyrannical. That’s why so many people couldn’t accept that Jesus was God—He spoke in peace, calmness, and grace. He let people make choices. He offered freedom.
God loves me enough to grant me the freedom to seek and trust Him, especially with my children. So I’m learning (the hard way) to lean into such a countercultural blessing.

Why Does Parenting Require Humility Instead of Control?
Since becoming a mother and navigating so much of the adult world, I’m a firm believer that all sin boils down to one word: pride. Pride is what destroyed Adam and Eve in Eden, and it’s the same sin that makes us believe we can have total control of ourselves and anyone else in our lives.
Not only is this a false idea, but it feeds fear when things don’t go as we planned. Meanwhile, its inflated ego keeps us from leaning into God as our provider, believing self is the safest source to trust. However, all along, this is an attack, though often unintentional, we hurl at God, overlooking and undermining His power, sovereignty, and goodness.
It’s truly freeing to live in humility, in trusting that your efforts can’t and won’t deter or deflect God’s good plan—for yourself and your children.
As a Christian parent, I must daily remind myself that my primary goal is to nurture my sons’ souls and point them to the goodness and glory of Jesus. Everything outside of that can’t get in the way of me living my life as an example of resting in God’s peace and joy.
No matter a measles outbreak or a vaccine schedule upended by the federal government—no matter unforeseen financial crises, relationship upheavals, civil unrest, or global wars—there is one Psalm that leaves me little choice but to adhere to and rest in God’s good, rich plan for me and my babies:
O Lord, I have so many enemies; so many are against me. So many are saying, “God will never rescue him!” But you, O Lord, are a shield around me; you are my glory, the one who holds my head high. I cried out to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy mountain. I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety, for the Lord was watching over me. I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies who surround me on every side. Arise, O Lord! Rescue me, my God! Slap all my enemies in the face! Shatter the teeth of the wicked! Victory comes from you, O Lord. May you bless your people. Psalm 3
Consider this prayer: “Lord, you defeat all of my foes, including fear. In your almighty name, crush my doubts and anxious thoughts with your heel, and remind me to pursue your wisdom rather than a (false) opportunity to control a situation. As I seek to do what is best for my children, remind me of your great, beautiful plan for their lives. May I trust that you are not only in control, but loving, warm, and perfectly paternal. In your holy name, God. Amen.”
