Birth of Samuel Wolcott, American Congregational missionary and minister. He served as a missionary in Syria from 1840 to 1842, and later pastored churches in Rhode Island, Illinois, and Ohio. Although he did not write his first hymn until he was 56 years old, he left more than two hundred at his death, including the well-known "Christ for the World We Sing."
