Adoniram Judson Gordon (1836 to 1895)
Promoter of the Social Gospel.

Birth of Adoniram Judson Gordon, Baptist minister and leading evangelical who emphasized the social aspect of the Gospel, working among the poor, the blacks, and other migrants. He was a leader in a new emphasis on the literal interpretation of the Scriptures. He founded the Boston Missionary Training School (now Gordon College and Divinity School), produced two hymnals, and wrote the music to which we sing "My Jesus, I Love Thee. "
