At a time when Baptists were illegal, he wrote Baptist doctrine, introduced hymn singing into Baptist churches and founded the congregation which eventually formed the church at which one of the most famous Baptist preachers, Charles Spurgeon, later ministered (it had by then moved and been renamed).
