A Prayer for Protection against Persecutors

1401 Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent [1] man; 2 Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war. 3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah. 4 Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings. 5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah. 6 I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O Lord. 7 O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

8 Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah. 9 As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them. 10 Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again. 11 Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him. 12 I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor. 13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

A Prayer for Protection against Persecutors

1401 In Hebrew texts 140:1-13 is numbered 140:2-14.Rescue me, Lord, from evildoers; protect me from the violent, 2 who devise evil plans in their hearts and stir up war every day. 3 They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent's; the poison of vipers is on their lips. The Hebrew has "Selah" (a word of uncertain meaning) here and at the end of verses 5 and 8. 4 Keep me safe, Lord, from the hands of the wicked; protect me from the violent, who devise ways to trip my feet. 5 The arrogant have hidden a snare for me; they have spread out the cords of their net and have set traps for me along my path. 6 I say to the Lord, "You are my God." Hear, Lord, my cry for mercy. 7 Sovereign Lord, my strong deliverer, you shield my head in the day of battle.

8 Do not grant the wicked their desires, Lord; do not let their plans succeed. 9 Those who surround me proudly rear their heads; may the mischief of their lips engulf them. 10 May burning coals fall on them; may they be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, never to rise. 11 May slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down the violent. 12 I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. 13 Surely the righteous will praise your name, and the upright will live in your presence.

The Message

A Prayer for Protection against Persecutors

1401 God, get me out of here, away from this evil; protect me from these vicious people. 2 All they do is think up new ways to be bad; they spend their days plotting war games. 3 They practice the sharp rhetoric of hate and hurt, speak venomous words that maim and kill. 4 God, keep me out of the clutch of these wicked ones, protect me from these vicious people; 5 Stuffed with self-importance, they plot ways to trip me up, determined to bring me down. These crooks invent traps to catch me and do their best to incriminate me. 6 I prayed, "God, you're my God! Listen, God! Mercy! 7 God, my Lord, Strong Savior, protect me when the fighting breaks out!

8 Don't let the wicked have their way, God, don't give them an inch!" 9 These troublemakers all around me - let them drown in their own verbal poison. 10 Let God pile hellfire on them, let him bury them alive in crevasses! 11 These loudmouths - don't let them be taken seriously; These savages - let the Devil hunt them down! 12 I know that you, God, are on the side of victims, that you care for the rights of the poor. 13 And I know that the righteous personally thank you, that good people are secure in your presence.

New Living Translation

A Prayer for Protection against Persecutors

1401 O Lord, rescue me from evil people. Protect me from those who are violent, 2 those who plot evil in their hearts and stir up trouble all day long. 3 Their tongues sting like a snake; the venom of a viper drips from their lips. Interlude 4 O Lord, keep me out of the hands of the wicked. Protect me from those who are violent, for they are plotting against me. 5 The proud have set a trap to catch me; they have stretched out a net; they have placed traps all along the way. Interlude 6 I said to the Lord, "You are my God!" Listen, O Lord, to my cries for mercy! 7 O Sovereign Lord, the strong one who rescued me, you protected me on the day of battle.

8 Lord, do not let evil people have their way. Do not let their evil schemes succeed, or they will become proud. Interlude 9 Let my enemies be destroyed by the very evil they have planned for me. 10 Let burning coals fall down on their heads. Let them be thrown into the fire or into watery pits from which they can't escape. 11 Don't let liars prosper here in our land. Cause great disasters to fall on the violent. 12 But I know the Lord will help those they persecute; he will give justice to the poor. 13 Surely righteous people are praising your name; the godly will live in your presence.

Matthew Henry's Commentary on Psalm 140:1-20

Commentary on Psalm 140:1-7

(Read Psalm 140:1-7)

The more danger appears, the more earnest we should be in prayer to God. All are safe whom the Lord protects. If he be for us, who can be against us? We should especially watch and pray, that the Lord would hold up our goings in his ways, that our footsteps slip not. God is as able to keep his people from secret fraud as from open force; and the experience we have had of his power and care, in dangers of one kind, may encourage us to depend upon him in other dangers.

Commentary on Psalm 140:8-13

(Read Psalm 140:8-13)

Believers may pray that God would not grant the desires of the wicked, nor further their evil devices. False accusers will bring mischief upon themselves, even the burning coals of Divine vengeance. And surely the righteous shall dwell in God's presence, and give him thanks for evermore. This is true thanksgiving, even thanks-living: this use we should make of all our deliverances, we should serve God the more closely and cheerfully. Those who, though evil spoken of and ill-used by men, are righteous in the sight of God, being justified by the righteousness of Christ, which is imputed to them, and received by faith, as the effect of which, they live soberly and righteously; these give thanks to the Lord, for the righteousness whereby they are made righteous, and for every blessing of grace, and mercy of life.
