A Protestation of Integrity

261 Vindicate me, O Lord , for I have walked in my integrity , And I have trusted in the Lord without wavering . 2 Examine me, O Lord , and try me; Test my mind and my heart . 3 For Your lovingkindness is before my eyes , And I have walked in Your truth . 4 I do not sit with deceitful men , Nor will I go with pretenders . 5 I hate the assembly of evildoers , And I will not sit with the wicked .

6 I shall wash my hands in innocence , And I will go about Your altar , O Lord , 7 That I may proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving And declare all Your wonders . 8 O Lord , I love the habitation of Your house And the place where Your glory dwells . 9 Do not take my soul away along with sinners , Nor my life with men of bloodshed , 10 In whose hands is a wicked scheme , And whose right hand is full of bribes . 11 But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity ; Redeem me, and be gracious to me. 12 My foot stands on a level place ; In the congregations I shall bless the Lord .

The LORD Is My Light and My Salvation

271 The Lord is my light and my salvation ; Whom shall I fear ? The Lord is the defense of my life ; Whom shall I dread ? 2 When evildoers came upon me to devour my flesh , My adversaries and my enemies , they stumbled and fell . 3 Though a host encamp against me, My heart will not fear ; Though war arise against me, In spite of this I shall be confident . 4 One thing I have asked from the Lord , that I shall seek : That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life , To behold the beauty of the Lord And to meditate in His temple . 5 For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle ; In the secret place of His tent He will hide me; He will lift me up on a rock . 6 And now my head will be lifted up above my enemies around me, And I will offer in His tent sacrifices with shouts of joy ; I will sing , yes, I will sing praises to the Lord .

7 Hear , O Lord , when I cry with my voice , And be gracious to me and answer me. 8 When You said, " Seek My face ," my heart said to You, "Your face , O Lord , I shall seek ." 9 Do not hide Your face from me, Do not turn Your servant away in anger ; You have been my help ; Do not abandon me nor forsake me, O God of my salvation ! 10 For my father and my mother have forsaken me, But the Lord will take me up. 11 Teach me Your way , O Lord , And lead me in a level path Because of my foes . 12 Do not deliver me over to the desire of my adversaries , For false witnesses have risen against me, And such as breathe out violence . 13 I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord In the land of the living . 14 Wait for the Lord ; Be strong and let your heart take courage ; Yes, wait for the Lord .

A Prayer for Help and Praise for Its Answer

281 To You, O Lord , I call ; My rock , do not be deaf to me, For if You are silent to me, I will become like those who go down to the pit . 2 Hear the voice of my supplications when I cry to You for help , When I lift up my hands toward Your holy sanctuary . 3 Do not drag me away with the wicked And with those who work iniquity , Who speak peace with their neighbors , While evil is in their hearts . 4 Requite them according to their work and according to the evil of their practices ; Requite them according to the deeds of their hands ; Repay them their recompense . 5 Because they do not regard the works of the Lord Nor the deeds of His hands , He will tear them down and not build them up.

6 Blessed be the Lord , Because He has heard the voice of my supplication . 7 The Lord is my strength and my shield ; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped ; Therefore my heart exults , And with my song I shall thank Him. 8 The Lord is their strength , And He is a saving defense to His anointed . 9 Save Your people and bless Your inheritance ; Be their shepherd also, and carry them forever e .

221 " Brethren e and fathers , hear my defense which I now offer to you." 2 And when they heard that he was addressing them in the Hebrew dialect , they became even more quiet ; and he said ,

3 " I am a Jew , born in Tarsus of Cilicia , but brought up in this city , educated under e e Gamaliel , strictly according to the law of our fathers , being zealous for God just as you all are today . 4 " I persecuted this Way to the death , binding and putting both men and women into prisons , 5 as also the high priest and all the Council of the elders can testify . From them I also received letters to the brethren , and started off for Damascus in order to bring even those who were there to Jerusalem as prisoners to be punished .

Paul Tells of His Conversion

6 " But it happened that as I was on my way , approaching Damascus about noontime , a very bright light suddenly flashed from heaven all around me, 7 and I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul , Saul , why are you persecuting Me?' 8 "And I answered , 'Who are You, Lord ?' And He said to me, 'I am Jesus the Nazarene , whom you are persecuting .' 9 "And those who were with me saw the light , to be sure , but did not understand the voice of the One who was speaking to me. 10 "And I said , ' What shall I do , Lord ?' And the Lord said to me, 'Get up and go on into Damascus , and there you will be told of all that has been appointed for you to do .' 11 "But since I could not see because of the brightness of that light , I was led by the hand by those who were with me and came into Damascus . 12 "A certain Ananias , a man who was devout by the standard of the Law , and well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there, 13 came to me, and standing near said to me, ' Brother Saul , receive your sight !' And at that very time I looked up at him. 14 "And he said , ' The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will and to see the Righteous One and to hear an utterance from His mouth . 15 'For you will be a witness for Him to all men of what you have seen and heard . 16 'Now why do you delay ? Get up and be baptized , and wash away your sins , calling on His name .'

Paul's Call to the Gentiles

17 "It happened when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple , that I fell into a trance , 18 and I saw Him saying to me, ' Make haste , and get out of Jerusalem quickly , because they will not accept your testimony about Me.' 19 "And I said , 'Lord , they themselves understand that in one synagogue after another I used to imprison and beat those who believed in You. 20 'And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was being shed , I also was standing by approving , and watching out for the coats of those who were slaying him.' 21 "And He said to me, 'Go ! For I will send you far away to the Gentiles .'"

Paul in the Custody of the Chief Captain

22 They listened to him up to this statement , and then they raised their voices and said , " Away with such a fellow from the earth , for he should not be allowed to live !" 23 And as they were crying out and throwing off their cloaks and tossing dust into the air , 24 the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks , stating that he should be examined by scourging so that he might find out the reason why e they were shouting against him that way . 25 But when they stretched him out with thongs , Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, "Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman and uncondemned ?" 26 When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and told him, saying , "What are you about to do ? For this man is a Roman ." 27 The commander came and said to him, "Tell me, are you a Roman ?" And he said , "Yes ." 28 The commander answered , "I acquired this citizenship with a large sum of money ." And Paul said , "But I was actually born a citizen." 29 Therefore those who were about to examine him immediately let go of him; and the commander also was afraid when he found out that he was a Roman , and because he had put him in chains .

Paul before the Council

30 But on the next day , wishing to know for certain why he had been accused by the Jews , he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the Council to assemble , and brought Paul down and set him before them.
