10 Truths about Your Father in Heaven

In an ever-changing world, it is important for you to know what truth remains about your Father in Heaven. These are the very truths that will never change about God, your Father. They are promises to you that the Father will keep during your lifetime on earth as you walk the straight and narrow path as a daughter/son of the One True God. These truths will help you remain steadfast and not be thrown to and fro as hardships, valley moments, or seasons, and difficult circumstances come into your life. It will allow you to continue to grow deeper and deeper roots that God will help you use to stay anchored to Him as you navigate this journey called “life,” this side of heaven.

Unlike an earthly father, God the Father is unchanging.  From Genesis to Revelation, God paints a beautiful love story between Him, the Father, and you, His daughter or son. God longs for you to stay in a constant relationship with Him as He guides and leads you through this life. He is always a gentleman, though, and will never force His love and relationship on you. However, when you choose to walk hand in hand with Him, He will be a loving Father who will never let you down and will keep his promises and the truths of His true character. These 10 truths about God your Father are exclaimed and promised from the beginning when the first human, Adam, was formed to the moment you take your last breath or when Jesus' second coming is fulfilled as vividly explained in Revelation. Study, believe, and stay anchored to these 10 Truths about Your Father in Heaven on your good and bad days.

1. God Is Good and Righteous

A song that overtook the Christian music world was “Good Good Father” by Chris Tomlin.  The chorus proclaimed:

"You're a good, good Father
It's who You are, it's who You are, it's who You are
And I'm loved by You
It's who I am, it's who I am, it's who I am."

This song proclaims the most important truth about God. God is Good and Righteous. Only goodness comes out of God. He is good and righteous and only does what is GOOD. Do you believe that? If you say yes, then you can build a solid relationship and foundation with God. If you say no, then all of the other truths about God will not matter and will be void. Psalm 145:17 declares: The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does. Righteousness is defined as “someone who is morally upright, just, and adheres to a strong sense of right and wrong.” God will only do good. No bad or wrong can come out of Him. That would be against His true character and being. You can declare like David did in the Psalm 136:1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever (personal emphasis added).

2. God Is Eternal and Unchanging

God is unchanging and eternal. He will never change and will exist forever and ever, Amen. In Malachi 3:6a, God declares, "I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed." God does NOT change. He remains faithful to His original covenant with man, no matter what any human decides, acts on, or says. God will always stay the same and faithfully walk in His covenant with believers to never leave or forsake them. God keeps his promises! As a Shepherd, He remains steadfast as the good leader leading those He loves every step of the way as long as they are willing to listen, know His voice, and obediently walk in the direction He guides them. Isaiah 40:28 states, "The Lord is the everlasting God." God and His covenant promises will last for all of eternity.  Unlike an earthly father, God will not say Oh, I change my mind. I am no longer going to walk in on _______ promise. What God says He ALWAYS will fulfill. What God says will be done!

3. God Is Merciful

Mercy is defined as “compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one's power to punish or harm.” Ephesians 2:4-5 reveals: But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions–it is by grace you have been saved. God is full of mercy. That is why His wrath does not consume you every day when you choose to walk in blatant disobedience and sin. Your sin deserves to be punished through death and eternal damnation.  However, as Psalm 103:13 so clearly shares: As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him. Through the blood of Jesus, God has compassion for anyone who accepts Jesus as Savior and Lord.

"The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love (Psalm 103:8and Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail." - Lamentations 3:22-23

The Good, Good Father loves you with every part of his being and is merciful with you daily. As a Christ follower, it is your job to accept and believe his mercy for you. The world likes to paint God as a wrathful God, but at His core, He is merciful and offers you compassion and forgiveness.

4. God Is Gracious

4. God Is Gracious

This fourth truth about God goes hand in hand with mercy. Because God is merciful and righteous, He offers his grace to all of humanity. Biblical grace is defined as unmerited favor and love to all of humanity, particularly through the gift of salvation. Ephesians 2:7-8 beautifully explains how grace is given and attained: In order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God (personal emphasis added).

Contrary to worldly and religious belief, grace is not attainable through human efforts and human “good.” It is a gift that God gives you.  Just like on your birthday, you do not earn yourself a gift from someone for your good works and conduct. God’s grace is given in the same manner. You do nothing to earn and attain grace. God freely gives it to those who believe in and call Jesus Lord and Savior of their life. No amount of “good” works will get you any form of grace. Grace is given to all believers because "The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion" (Psalm 116:5).  Therefore, you can walk in the clarity that "My [God’s] grace is sufficient for you" (2 Cor. 12:9).

5. God Is Trustworthy

This fifth truth, “trustworthy,” is a hard one for many believers of God the Father. The main reason for that is because everyone has been let down by at least another human. Someone has broken your trust. It is a guarantee that during your lifetime, at least one person, if not more, will break your trust. Humans are fallible and sinners. However, God is righteous and unchanging and is trustworthy. Matthew 6:27-30 paints this beautiful picture of why you should trust God:

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?" (personal emphasis added).

God lovingly takes care of all of creation, but YOU are his prized possession. In Genesis, God called everything He formed good. However, when he created humans, He didn’t call human creation good. He called humans “great.” You are an image bear of God, and He wants ONLY the best for you. Matthew 7:11 goes one step further declaring "If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" (personal emphasis added). Thus, you can "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6).

6. God Is Forgiving

As Jesus was being crucified on the cross, he prayed, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. Jesus walked in utter obedience and unconditional love by dying on the cross for your and all of humanity's sins. As he was in agony, he interceded for those who were nailing him to the cross and for the sins of all of humankind that he bore on the cross. Jesus knew His mission and that was to be the innocent lamb slaughtered for your and all humans’ sins. By completing His mission, Jesus allows God to fulfill this sixth truth of being a forgiving God. "In him we have redemption through his [Jesus’] blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace" (Ephesians 1:7; emphasis added). Additionally, [God] "does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us" (Psalm 103:10-12; emphasis added).

7. God Is Strong and Powerful

A common phrase is “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” However, that is far from the truth. You are not strong enough to live out this life in your own strength and willpower. Instead, God is the one who is strong and powerful, and He is the one who is your strength and power. 1 Chronicles 29:11:12 shouts this truth:

"Yours is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor; for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; your are the ruler over all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all." (emphasis added).

God is the strong and powerful one, not you. Stop striving to be and believe that you are the strong one who is going to get you through everything. Instead, rest in the truth that "His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness (2 Peter 1:3; emphasis added). Furthermore, who is this King of glory? The Lord is strong and mighty; the Lord mighty in battle (Psalm 24:8). So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" (Isaiah 41:10; emphasis added).

8. God's Love is Unconditional

8. God's Love is Unconditional

This truth is breathed throughout all the previous truths mentioned prior. However, there are three direct scriptures that showcase how God loves you unconditionally.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). God gave up his own Son who is a part of Him and killed him through the most excruciating death so that you could See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! (1 John 3:1a; emphasis added). God loved you so much that he put his son to death, so that you could be his child and live eternally with Him due to his great mercy, grace, and love.  Therefore, know "that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations" (Deuteronomy 7:9).

9. God Is Always Present

You may not always “see” God with your earthly eyes, but He is always present. Hebrews 13:5b declares,

"God has said never will I leave you, never will I forsake you."

God has been with believers since the day humans were created. In the garden, He walked side by side with Adam and Eve. Humans were made to be in a relationship with God. Humans are image bearers of God. His prized possessions! As Deuteronomy 4:7 reminds, "What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him?" God is the only God who is alive and is present with his followers. He says in Revelation 3:20, "Here I am! I stand at the food and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me." God loves you so much and wants you to open the door, have two-way conversation with Him, and be in an intimate relationship with Him. God is a loving Father who wants to be with you always!

10. God Is Sovereign

He has ultimate authority and control over E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. That should bring you great comfort. God is independent of everything. He does not need anyone else to help Him rule this earth other than the whole Trinity, Jesus and Holy Spirit included. God sees everything taking place every day, and His plan will prevail.

"The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom." -Psalm 103:190
"God made the earth by his power; he rounded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding." Jeremiah 10:12

Through our sonship through Jesus, …the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding (Proverbs 2:6). As a child of God, look to God for knowledge and understanding. Accept the truth that He is in supreme control. Declare Lordship to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen (Romans 16:27). Then, you can walk in trust and faith and be led by the wise, just God who wants to lavish you with blessings.

God the Father is perfectly righteous and unchanging. His mercy, grace, and love for you runs deep. His forgiveness oozes out through the blood Jesus shed on the cross, making it possible for you to be called a beloved son or daughter of the One True God. Through His strength and power, He reigns sovereignly over all of creation. He is ever present, desiring to guide you with His wisdom and justice along the path He has prepared for you, even before you took your first breath. As you trust in His provision and ways, He walks with you every step of the way. May you hold fast to these 10 truths about your Heavenly Father, so that you can peacefully walk beside still waters with the King of Kings, Sovereign God. With confidence, declare

"I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever…Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom…The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made." -Psalm 145:1, 3, 9
