Easter Table Prayer

Creator God and Lord of Life,

You who call forth from the darkness of death all those who love You, we rejoice, on this Easter Sunday, in the resurrection from the dead of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Visit our home and this table with Your bright blessing of peace and life. We pause in the midst of this prayer to remember all the holy dead of our family who live now in You and who await the final and glorious resurrection of the dead.

Pause for silent reflection to remember those who have died.

May they and we, because of our faith in You, our God, taste in the victory of life over death. May the Risen Christ, our Lord and Savior, be our guest as we celebrate His resurrection with this Easter Sunday dinner. Bless those whose work to prepare this meal has truly been a work of prayer, and bless all of us who shall share it with Easter love and joy.

May You, then, bless this table and this food, and each of us in Your holy name. Amen.

Prayers of Thanksgiving

  • Father, praise You for friendship and family! Thank You for bringing us together today to share a meal. The people in our lives bring us such joy, and we are grateful for the time spent in fellowship together. Help us use this time to bond closer as a group, and learn to love each other more. Bless our appetites, both physical and spiritual, to honor You in all we do. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. - Meg Bucher

  • Thank You, Lord God, for this food we are about to eat. Thank You for the hands that have prepared it, for those sitting around the table who are here to share it, and for the ability to be here together under one roof, and enjoy these blessings at Your hand. We realize that everything we have comes from You and for that, we are eternally grateful. We also thank You for what we don’t have this year, for we trust that You have withheld in Your goodness and out of Your protection for us. Thank You that Scripture says You are a Good Father who loves to give gifts to Your children. We sit here as evidence of Your goodness. Thank You for the gift of today and all who are here to share it with us. In the name of Your Son, Jesus, we pray. Amen. Cindi McMenamin

  • Oh, Precious Heavenly Father! As I look back on the good things I’ve done, Lord I can’t help but to see Your hands orchestrating it. At my very best, I still fall short, and thankfully it’s no surprise to You. You never expected me to get it perfect, that’s why Jesus had to come. I will never achieve perfection on this side of eternity. But Lord that shouldn’t stop me from striving to do it just like Jesus did – to precisely follow the recipe that is so clearly spelled out in Your precious Word. Lord, it’s through Your grace, Your mercy, and Your sacrifice, ALONE, that I will one day walk just as He walks! Oh what a day that will be! Until then Lord may I always rely on You to be the source of my confidence, realizing it’s through You, for You, and by You that I succeed … AMEN! - Stephanie Davis

  • Father, As we sit here today preparing to eat this food, we remember Your Son. How He came here as a human being and ate with His family and friends just like we do. Thank You for the gift of Jesus, and that we can look to Him knowing He understands our hunger. Bless us, Lord Jesus, and stir our hearts to remember You in all we do. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. - Author Unknown

  • Dear Lord, help us when we start to allow the busy day, frustrations, and unmet expectations to distract us from the reasons we have to be grateful. You have blessed us abundantly. Help us to have hearts of thankfulness every day and to set aside time to remember all that you have done for us and promise to do in and through us. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  • Father, We have gathered to share time together in Your honor. Thank You for forming us as a family. We thank you for all of the gifts you’ve given to those in this room and how they contribute to your Kingdom. Help each member of our family use these gifts to your glory. Guide our conversations and steer our hearts to Your purpose for our lives. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. - Cindi McMenamin

Bible Verses about the Blessing of Food

"So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." ~ 1 Corinthians 10:31

"When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you." ~ Deuteronomy 8:10

And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. ~ Genesis 1:29

Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. ~ Genesis 9:3

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. ~ John 6:35

"The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing." ~ Psalm 145:15-16

"After he said this, he took some bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to eat." ~ Acts 27:35

"And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people." ~ Matthew 14:19

Does God Require Prayer Before Meals?

I don't know anywhere in the scripture where it says you should pray before your meal, but I think it's a good tradition and a good costume, because it is, first of all, acknowledging that God has blessed us to be able to eat. For us Americans, that's not a big deal because we eat so much that we have to stop eating, but much of the world doesn't know where their next meal is going to be. And so they're praying and saying, "God, thank you for providing my needs for this day. Give us this day our daily bread."

Most of the audience of Jesus' time were poor and they prayed for it. It's an acknowledgment of God's sovereignty to say that, "Yeah, I work hard and I sweat to put food on the table, but God gave me the ability to do that. God gave me the opportunity to do that, and ultimately I'm here because God is here."

I think with children, it's so important because what you're telling children when you pray before your meal is you're telling your kids at a young age that we are going to stop, and before we do anything, we're going to acknowledge that this food is here and we are blessed because of God, and because of God alone. I think it's a great and important thing.

Now, it's not a legalistic thing. I mean, if we forget to pray, God's not going to zap you or poison your food, but I think it's good to be in that prayerful mode of that God is the provider.
