15 Prayers for Grandchildren Every Grandparent Should Pray

1. Salvation. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16 NJV)

Father, thank you for giving Your Son for our salvation. I pray for the salvation of [my grandchild’s name]. I ask that not one of my grandchildren would perish without knowing You, but that [they] would have eternal life through Jesus Christ. Give them assurance of Your love throughout their lives. 

2. Devotion. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37 ESV)

Jesus, I ask that my grandchildren will love you with all their heart, mind, and soul. I pray they will be devoted to you above anything or anyone else in all the world. May they with all their beings be loyal, first and foremost, to their heavenly King.

3. Obedience. “Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.” (Proverbs 19:20 NIV)

Lord, anchor my grandchildren in obedience to Your Word. Help them learn to obey their parents and godly authorities. May they listen to You, accept discipline, and grow in wisdom.

4. Maturity. “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52 ESV)

I pray, Lord, that my grandsons and granddaughters will grow like Jesus did. Help them to grow physically strong, wise, and in good relationship with others. 

5. Protection. “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” (Psalm 91:11-12 ESV)

Father, protect my grandchildren today. Give them physical and spiritual safety. Be a fortress around them and give them refuge from evil and harm. Shelter them when they are in danger or afraid. Teach them to live in Your presence. 

6. Health. “Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.” (3 John 1:2 ESV)

I pray that my grandchildren’s health would be strong and protected. Keep them from illness, harmful substances, and unhealthy activities. Teach my grandchildren to practice good health habits for their overall well-being. Lord, help them grow both in body and soul.

7. Mind. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."  (Philippians 4:6-7 NIV)

Lord, replace any anxiousness my grandchildren may feel with trust in You. Teach them to pray in every troubling situation. Give them balance. When they are afraid, remind them to ask You for help. Cover them with Your peace. Guard their hearts and minds from thoughts that would draw them away into a spiral of worldly solutions. Anchor their mindset firmly in Jesus. 

8. Heart. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23 NIV)

I pray that my grandchildren would guard their hearts with Your word. Keep them pure from the world and center their will and desires on those things that please You. May what springs from their hearts reflect You. 

9. Actions. “Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.” (Psalm 119:37 ESV)

When temptations come, Jesus, please help my grandchildren choose to turn their eyes to You. May their actions and practices honor You. Help them do the right thing. Teach them to submit their reactions to Your control. Keep their eyes from sin and help them chase after the things You value. I pray their lives would boldly show the world that they choose to follow You.

10. For knowledge and wisdom. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7 NIV)

Father, help my grandchildren enjoy learning and give them curious minds. Develop and grow my grandchildren to worship You as Creator and honor You as Lord. Train them to surrender control of difficult problems to You. Help them understand their teachers and school subjects. Give discernment about what agrees with Your Word and what does not. Let them reflect true knowledge and wisdom rather than boisterous self-inflation. 

11. As Students. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV)

Dear Jesus, bring diligence to my grandchild’s character. Help each one be a student of Your Word, ever expanding in knowledge and correct interpretation of Scripture. Help them develop daily disciplines in Your Word and bring this attentiveness to direct other study habits. May my grandchildren study to learn and grow in humility, with bright minds, inquisitive hearts, and responsible habits. 

12. To be motivated learners. “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3 NASB)

Father, I ask that You would motivate my grandchildren to be willing learners. I pray that as they grow in knowledge, it would be evident in their display of grace and consideration to others. Keep them humbly inquisitive. Protect them from pride and self-focus. May they learn with true integrity. And may it display in responsible servanthood and humility.

13. Continue. “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:14-15 ESV)

Father, I pray for my grandchildren and for myself as a grandparent that I would continue to learn from your Word and walk faithfully with Jesus. I ask that the testimony of my life would encourage my grandchild to also follow in the footsteps of Jesus. 

14. Persevere. “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1KJV)

Father, I pray for my grandchildren and, along with them, for myself. Show us together what we need to get rid of in our lives. Convict our hearts when we sin. Forgive us and help us persevere with our eyes fixed on You. 

15. Press on. “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14 NKJV)

Help us as seasoned grandparents to press on with our grandchildren. Keep me from ever thinking I have arrived. Help me to move forward with love and gentleness. Help us learn and grow together. Hold us, grandchildren and grandparents, faithful to Jesus and in prayer for one another. 

Aren’t you grateful for our special calling and ministry as generational prayer warriors? These grandchildren make us laugh and sometimes cause us to cry. We clean up the messes, and we watch as they grow. But all the while, perched high on the branch of our family tree, we undertake a holy privilege and distinct mission. We pray.
