If We Acknowledge God, Will He Direct Our Paths?

If we rely on ourselves, the world, or others to direct our path, we will find ourselves going down the wrong street every time. By submitting and obeying God, we are following Him, and He is directing our steps.

If We Acknowledge God, Will He Direct Our Paths?

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (NIV). The King James Version reads, “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” From this passage of Scripture, the Bible tells us that God will direct our paths if we acknowledge and submit to Him.

What Does 'He Will Direct Your Paths' Mean in the Bible

Part of acknowledging God is by trusting in Him. This means we cannot trust in ourselves. The world advocates the necessity of trusting in ourselves rather than trusting in God. As believers, we know our trust has to be in God alone. Christians cannot place trust in anything or anyone else.

If we acknowledge God, He will direct our paths. You can acknowledge Him by trusting Him and praying to Him. Prayer is our absolute dependence on God. The spiritual discipline of prayer communicates to God that we need Him. Prayer is the ultimate way we communicate with God, and He communicates back to us through His Word.

By acknowledging God in prayer and praying for Him to help guide us, He will direct our paths through the Bible. God does not speak to us through any other means, except by His Word. The Bible is the divine Word of God, and it is completely sufficient to direct our paths (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Prayer is vital in acknowledging God in order for Him to direct our paths. If we do not talk to God in prayer, we will not be able to be directed in the right direction. If we are consistently not praying and not reading the Bible, we will be more influenced by the world, our own flesh, or Satan.

If we do not let God direct our paths, the world, our sinful flesh, or Satan will. If we do not let God direct our paths, the road will end in destruction. This is why it is vitally important for us to acknowledge God and follow His direction.

What Does 'He Will Direct Your Paths' Look Like?

Another aspect of acknowledging God is by reading about Him in the Bible. Reading the Bible is how we learn about God, get to know Him, and grow to become more like Him. Taking the time to read the Bible is vital to acknowledging God.

When we acknowledge God by reading the Bible, it demonstrates our dependence on Him. By reading the Bible, studying it, and applying it to our lives, we will be following God faithfully.

God directs our paths through the Bible and teaches us the way to go. The Psalmist says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105). The Bible is the bright light in the dark world to guide our steps. Apart from the Bible, believers will not be able to be directed by God.

God does not speak to us out of storm clouds as He did in the Old Testament. Rather, God speaks to us and directs our paths through His Word. When we follow God’s guidance in the Bible, it will prevent us from sinning against God and making bad decisions.

How Does Obeying God Work with Him Directing Our Paths?

Furthermore, acknowledging God means we must obey Him. It is crucial we obey God’s Word — not only read it. James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” Reading the Bible is only the first step. After we read the Bible and understand it, we have to apply what it says to our lives.

Applying the teachings of the Bible by obedience is the hard part. However, part of acknowledging God means we have to obey Him. When we obey Him, He directs our path. This is because by obeying God’s Word and living out our faith, we will be transformed to reflect His Image.

We are not alone in the transformation of our inner beings as the Holy Spirit enables us to obey God. With time, we can develop the fruit of the Spirit by following and obeying the Word of God (Galatians 5:22-23).

How Will We Know 'He Will Direct Your Paths' in the Day-to-Day?

Acknowledging God can begin today. We can acknowledge God by praying to Him, reading the Bible, and following Him faithfully. When we acknowledge God, He will direct our paths. If we are struggling with an important decision, we need to take it to God in prayer.

This shows our dependence on God. God already knows what we need, but He wants us to come to Him in full trust and dependence. God directs our path through the Bible. He does not direct our paths through our own thoughts or desires.

If we do not take time to read the Bible, we will not be able to have the proper guidance. The Bible is our guidebook to life as it directs us, comforts us, and gives us hope. We cannot know God and His plan apart from the Bible.

The Bible gives us the correct directions each time we read it. The Word of God will never lead you astray nor will it provide you with false information. Acknowledging God through prayer and obedience will cause God to direct your path through the Bible.

This does not mean that every single question we have will be answered by God, but it does mean that when we follow the Bible, we are following the right direction of God’s Will.

What Does This Mean?

All believers can be directed by God if they pray to Him, read the Bible, submit to Him, and follow Him in obedience. Acknowledging God and recognizing His presence is the first step. You have to trust in God and fully depend on Him.

You cannot depend on yourself to direct your own path. If we rely on ourselves, the world, or others to direct our path, we will find ourselves going down the wrong street every time. Part of acknowledging God means we have to submit and obey Him. By submitting and obeying God, we are following Him, and He is directing our steps.

God speaks to us through the Bible as it is His Word. Whenever we are unsure of something, we need to acknowledge God in prayer, and He will direct our steps through His Word. If you are struggling today, ask God to help you.

He is always ready to hear from you and He delights to help His children. If you seek Him out, He will direct your paths and help you go in the right direction. God tells us, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13).
