Why More NFL Draft Picks Are Naming Jesus

The NFL Draft is an event that captures the interest of the nation. This media spectacle has grown increasingly popular for NFL fans to weigh in on over the past 25-plus years. During the 2025 NFL Draft, there were over 4.25 billion social media impressions connected to this three-day football event, and not a single tackle was made!

The Draft is more than a sports event; it’s a national broadcast platform where millions of viewers tune in to see exclusive interviews and social media passes along viral moments with the athletes. Fans can’t get enough of their favorite players. The stories these athletes share carry significant cultural weight. Athletes know their moment to share during the Draft serves as their first public message as professionals. People will be talking about whatever they choose to share!

As we have the opportunity to hear more from the athletes themselves as the draft picks are made, there is a growing trend of athletes publicly proclaiming their faith in Jesus. Often, these public figures give God all the glory for their success. They are using their influence to share the good news. Exclamations such as “All glory to God” and declarations such as “Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior” are becoming more common among players in interviews and elsewhere. Faith is being shared more boldly and consistently by NFL players. What do these moments reveal about faith in today’s sports culture?

More NFL Draft players are using one of the biggest stages in sports to publicly name Jesus, thank God, and frame their success through faith. This article explores what those moments reveal about public Christian identity, cultural boldness, and the growing visibility of faith in modern sports culture.

Athletes taking time to reference Jesus in the NFL Draft reflect a growing boldness in public Christian identity. Their achievements are not just framed as personal accomplishments but are shared as a testimony of God’s goodness and faithfulness in their lives. Many fans and viewers are shown the way to a relationship with Jesus through these heartfelt public statements of faith. Athletes publicly speak the name of Jesus because they recognize that their identity as a child of God comes first, and their success as athletes is secondary. Jesus is their foundation, not an afterthought. 1 John 3:1 says, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” The greatest title to be given to these athletes is "child of God"!

Draft day is a huge moment for these players, representing years of discipline, setbacks, perseverance, and more. Colossians 3:17 states, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Jesus has been their faithful companion as they have walked the road that has led them to the NFL. Giving thanks for all that God has done is a natural response for followers of Christ.

Why Are NFL Draft Players Talking More Openly About Jesus?

NFL Draft players are talking more openly about Jesus because many see faith not as a private add-on but as the foundation of their identity. Draft night gives them a rare national platform, and some are choosing to use that moment not only to celebrate success but to publicly give God glory and point viewers to what matters most.

Why Are NFL Players Sharing Their Faith So Publicly?

These bold and clear statements from athletes stand out because the Draft is not a private church event but rather an extremely visible media platform! It takes courage and deep conviction to share the gospel on National Television and Social Media platforms that reach millions, especially in today’s divided culture! Athletes are choosing conviction over the easier road of neutrality. Romans 1:16 reminds us,

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.”

NFL players are choosing boldness, pride, and public gratitude over neutrality, shame, or timid living. This growing openness among players is helping to shift the cultural atmosphere. These athletes remind us of 1 Timothy 1:7, which says, “or the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” Faith is something to be shared, not avoided. Our hope is for more than us! Those who know us should be led to Jesus through our words and actions. Sports and beyond are increasingly serving as platforms for public spirituality.

How Are People Reacting to Athletes Talking about Jesus?

Many are supportive of athletes sharing their personal convictions publicly. They see athletes as role models and are inspired by their authentic beliefs. Their willingness to share encourages younger fans and athletes in their own faith, promoting more boldness in our culture.

Others are skeptical, seeing these moments as performative, insincere, or just expected. Many debate whether faith belongs in conversations about sports and desire more separation between public life and private beliefs. There is some cultural tension as many in the sports and entertainment world debate whether athletes' expression of faith is appropriate. Ultimately, it’s up to each athlete to decide how open they are comfortable being about their personal views. Being a public figure is hard, and enduring the scrutiny of social media can be a heavy burden.

What Do These NFL Draft Faith Moments Reveal About Modern Faith?

Contrary to the expectations for declining public religion, faith is becoming more public again. Players feel led to act as public witnesses in the digital age, using their fame and success as a way to share the belief that acts as an anchor to their souls. With the power of social media, the world is instantly able to be reached with their words of hope.

The downside of this very public proclamation of faith is that these leaders endure more scathing scrutiny for their words, actions, and choices. When you mess up, the whole world is there to rebuke you, adding a lot of pressure to those who share their personal beliefs with the world. Jesus becomes a person these athletes declare that they love and also a part of their identity when they boldly share with the world.

Why Do Faith and Success Intersect for Christian Athletes?

Christians see success as something to steward. A gift from God. Something to use for God’s glory. This is in contrast to the world’s view that success is a self-made achievement. This belief leads those who follow Jesus and find themselves in positions of great influence to boldly share that God is their source and their provider. Giving thanks for all that God has done is an essential tenet of Christian living.

Additionally, bold faith in our very divided world encourages young, ambitious athletes. A path is being made for those who desire to achieve greatness in their sport and also hope to honor God with their lives. The current references to Jesus in the NFL are normalizing spiritual language in sports culture. Even student athletes can feel emboldened to share Jesus in their schools and communities as they seek to follow the example of more well-known players.

How Should Christians Respond to These Public Faith Moments?

Christians should respond to these moments with gratitude, discernment, and prayer. Public declarations of faith can encourage believers, challenge cultural assumptions, and remind the next generation that Jesus belongs in every arena of life, including sports. At the same time, these moments should move us beyond admiration and into application by asking whether we are willing to honor Christ openly in our own callings, too.

The NFL Draft is becoming a place where many can hear the name of Jesus proclaimed! This exciting moment of sports entertainment is also serving as a public witness to millions of viewers. We see players boldly affirm that their first allegiance is to Jesus Christ and then to the world. What an amazing testimony these athletes are becoming to the next generation! These moments show that faith remains as powerful as NFL players boldly and unashamedly share their faith on one of America’s biggest stages!
