Former NFL coach and sports analyst Tony Dungy believes his outspoken Christian faith and pro-life activism might have played a role in his removal from NBC Sports after almost two decades as a sports analyst at the network.
Speaking with former SportsCenter anchor Sage Steele on her podcast, “The Sage Steele Show,” the Super Bowl-winning coach said his exit from the network was due to NBC executives wanting younger personalities, but added that other factors may have been at play as well.
“They want you to be careful because they want to attract everybody,” Dungy responded, referring to the TV industry. “They don’t always appreciate you speaking about your faith.”
He maintained that he will uphold his faith and values regardless of the opposition from the entertainment industry, The Christian Post reported.
“I’m always going to do that, and I’m going to try to do it in a respectful way, but people are going to know that I’m a Christian," he stated. "So, that part is never going to leave."
Dungy also recalled that NBC executives were unhappy with his participation in the 2023 March for Life, where he was asked to speak because “it was an important topic to me,” but he did not face immediate backlash.
“We kind of let it go. They knew where I stood. I knew where they stood.”
In 2024, Dungy expressed opposition to a proposed amendment to the Florida Constitution that was about “extending abortion beyond a certain time, and it was written very, very deceitfully," the outlet reported.
“I went on social media and said, ‘Hey, if you live in Florida, make sure you read this and understand what they’re saying and understand what you’re voting for.’ And it got a million-something views,” the former NFL analyst and coach recalled.
While Dungy says his pro-life activism may have led to his departure from NBC Sports, he said that reason was not entirely conclusive but, at the same time, “it really doesn’t matter."
In a social media post in March, the former Buccaneers and Colts coach, after his removal from NBC, explained that he wasn't sure what he would be doing next but that he was excited to see what the Lord had in store for him.
"God has always directed me in these moments and while I'm not sure what the next step will be for me—whether it will be in football, in broadcasting, or getting more involved in church and community outreach —I know God has plans for my life and I can't wait see them unfold,” he wrote on X/Twitter back in March. “And I am reminded of one of my favorite verses in the Bible-Romans 8:28. 'God works all things for His good for those who love the Lord.'"
When looking back on his time at NBC, Dungy looks back fondly at his time there and the memories he made with his fellow broadcasters and analysts.
"It was fun," Dungy told Steele. "It was enjoyable. Rodney Harrison and I came in together at the start of the 2009 season. And I thought, 'Yeah, I'll try this and see what happens. Maybe a year or two, we'll see.' And it ended up being 17 years. He and I together, and it was a special time. But the Lord has something else now."
When speaking about who and what influenced him as a Christian, he credited both of his parents, but especially his mother.
"My parents were very, very, just exceptional parents," he said. "And my mom talked to me all the time about it's not what you do, it's how you do, who you do it for. She was a strong Christian lady."
While his parents planted the seed of faith in Christ in him as he was growing up, he says his faith eventually grew stronger after he got to the NFL.
"Well, I got to the Pittsburgh Steelers as a rookie, and we had a team full of strong Christian guys, and that impacted me," he said. "And my roommate was a guy named Donnie Shell, and he took me to the team Bible studies, took me to the chapel service and he said, 'You got to start living your faith.'"
