Calvin University Announces New Center Examining the Intersection of AI, Technology and Christian Faith

As AI trends, usage and research continue to rise, schools, colleges, and institutions are exploring how to benefit most from the latest findings. For one Christian university in Grand Rapids, Mich., the intersection of AI and faith warrants study, as the school shows in its latest announcement.

Calvin University stated in a release posted on its website that it is establishing the Calvin Center for Faith and Technology.

The Calvin Center for Faith and Technology will function as a “new interdisciplinary center” providing thoughtful research on the intersection of faith, technology and leading voices. Beyond AI, however, the center aims to integrate emerging technologies.

Located in the School of Engineering and Computer Science, the center will combine elements of engineering, computer science, and faith while “bringing together perspectives from across the liberal arts and professional programs.”

As a whole, the center hopes to provoke deep and thoughtful questions that integrate technology into every fabric of our lives, from education and business to health care, science, philosophy, psychology, media, worship, governance and other areas of society.

Calvin University President Greg Elzinga mentioned that AI's growing impact on our world, particularly on faith, deserves study and consideration.

“Technology is shaping nearly every dimension of our lives, and Christians need to be part of that conversation, not simply reacting to technological change, but thoughtfully considering how technology can be developed and used in ways that serve our neighbors and contribute to the flourishing of our communities," he said.

“This center reflects the very best of Calvin University: a Reformed vision for engaging the world, a deep commitment to faith and learning, excellence in engineering and computer science, and a Christian liberal arts foundation that prepares students to serve and lead in every sphere of life," he added.

Calvin University, a private Christian school founded in 1876, is an educational institution of the Christian Reformed Church. Ranked as the No. 4 college in the Midwest among regional colleges, the school prides itself on helping students grow spiritually through their mind, body and soul.

While the Faith and Technology Center and its programs are still growing, more information on the school and the Calvin Center for Faith and Technology can be found here.
