A Prayer for Christians to Unite in a Divided World

"Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many." - Hebrews 12:14-15 NKJV

I sat in the car with a friend. We were having a disagreement and making no progress. I felt I was right, and my friend was not hearing me. I held my ground while simultaneously praying, “God, can you help them to apologize?” A thought immediately popped into my mind, “Why can’t you apologize first?” I could almost visualize the question taking a stab at my pride. I then responded to the question by saying, “Because I feel I am not being treated fairly, and this was brought about by them. They should apologize first.”
Another question popped into my mind, “Is being treated fairly and being apologized to first worth the relationship?” I had no response. I knew it wasn’t. To be honest, I didn’t entirely know what I had said that elicited such an unfair response, but I knew from the response of my friend that I had, in fact, hit a nerve. I apologized. And within a few minutes, they also apologized, and we were able to hear how we had hurt one another. By God’s grace, we forgave one another and moved on.
John Stott, a famous British pastor, once said, “Pride is your greatest enemy; humility is your greatest friend.” We live in a society that prides itself on being heard, where entitlement reigns, and your truth is the most important truth. Unfortunately, it’s not much different in The Church and “Christian circles.” Why is that? Our human nature is full of pride. Someone said that pride is at the root of all sin.
James 4:6 says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
John 5:19 says, “Jesus gave them this answer: 'Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.'”
If Jesus is our example, and He did everything the Father said – no questions, then we need to do the same. Our pride needs to go. Unity is only brought about by the Holy Spirit. Our daily goal should be to submit to Him and His guidance, and then unity will inevitably be a fruit of that submission.

“Lord, high and holy, meek and lowly, Thou hast brought me to the valley of vision…
Let me learn by paradox:
That the way down is the way up, that to be low is to be high, that the broken heart is the healed heart, that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit, that the repenting soul is the victorious soul, that to have nothing is to possess all, that to bear the cross is to wear the crown, that to give is to receive, that the valley is the place of vision.
Lord, in the daytime, stars can be seen from the deepest wells, and the deeper the wells, the brighter thy stars shine. Let me find Thy light in my darkness, Thy life in my death, Thy joy in my sorrow, Thy grace in my sin, Thy riches in my poverty, Thy glory in my valley.”
