Put Your Money to Work!

I am convinced Jesus would say this to all his followers: “Work hard. Earn as much as you can. And put your money to work!”

Money isn’t the root of all evil. It’s the love of money that’s the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10). Money is neutral. It’s your inward desires that make it good or bad.

Money can ensnare and woo the heart away from God. Jesus clearly said you can’t love God and money (Matthew 6:24). When you love money, a rival god has replaced the Lord God as first in your life.

Humans need to be careful not to fall prey to money’s monstrous, addictive side.

But there’s another perspective on money. It’s mandatory for missions. It’s essential for advancing the kingdom of God.

Therefore, God would first adjure all bosses and workers to love him with all their hearts, souls, minds, and might (Luke 10:27). Then he would call his people to work hard and put their money to work for him. Why? So that (and this is essential) one can give as much as possible away to serve and advance his kingdom.

Followers of Jesus must learn to say, “That’s enough. I don’t need any more.” They will have to put limits on spending and follow a budget. The tithe, 10 percent off the top, then becomes the training wheels of generosity.

Both employers and employees will desire to make and give away as much money as possible so that God’s kingdom can continually move forward.

That’s why Jesus would say, “Earn as much as you can. And put it to work!”

Not for self, but for others.

So his kingdom can come, and his will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
