Bible Verses about Tithing
What does the Bible say about tithing? Tithing in the Bible dates back to Genesis, when Abraham gave a tenth of everything to Melchizedek, and continues through the Old Testament law, where God commands His people to bring a tithe into the storehouse (Malachi 3:10). Tithing is mentioned throughout Scripture as an important part of supporting the church and showing your devotion to God. When we are prosperous, it is right to give back to our fellowship and community. Tithing usually centers on donations to the local church to ensure its continuation and success. However, the heart of the tithe is our love for God, not the amount we give.
Many Christians ask whether tithing is still commanded in the New Testament. While the Old Testament tithe was a specific percentage under the law, New Testament scriptures on tithes and offerings focus less on a fixed number and more on cheerful, generous giving from the heart (2 Corinthians 9:7).
