The simplest definition of prayer is communication between humankind and divinity. It is an exchange between the flawed (humanity) and the Holy (God). It is a meeting of the Eternal Sovereign One and a mere mortal. It is a divine encounter between the Creator of the universe and His masterpiece (humans). Prayer is a divine tool that brings Heaven to Earth; when we pray we invite God into our circumstances and we manifest all of Heaven’s promises.
Prayer is powerful. This simple act changes everything. Prayer is the transformative power between God and man that positively impacts things, people, situations, relationships, places, and obstacles that seem impossible. Prayer is the vehicle by which the invisible world is made tangible. If believers could harness this powerful tool, we would bring Heaven to Earth and God’s Kingdom would come. God’s will would be done here through prayer coupled with faith-filled works. I’d like to share three prayer postures that bring Heaven to Earth. A posture is a particular way of dealing with or considering something. Prayer is a way of life. The practice of the postures of gratitude, humility, and partnership with God in the life of the believer is essential to bringing Heaven to Earth.

1. A Posture of Gratitude
When we have the right perspective about God and humanity, we live from a posture of gratitude. The psalmist exclaimed, “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? (Psalm 8:3-4 KJV) He was captivated by the awesomeness of God as His creation testified to His Person. He marveled at the handiwork of the One True God. I believe the psalmist then saw his frailty and limitations compared to the vast greatness of God. He realized that humanity was flawed and insignificant before such an awesome, Almighty God. And it prompted him to humble himself.
When we live from a posture of gratitude, we touch the heart of God, and our hearts are transformed. A grateful heart is one that lifts up praise to God. God declares that He inhabits the praise of His people. God resides where praise resides. We invite the presence of God wherever we praise. When he enters our life, so do all good things. God is touched by our praise, adoration, faith, commitment, and love. He is pleased. When God is pleased, He acts on behalf of the believer. Simultaneously, as we live from a posture of gratitude, our hearts are transformed. In Isaiah’s divine God-encounter, when Isaiah saw the reality of God and himself, he felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. He loved God, but this encounter deepened his commitment and resolve. In prayer, when his eyes were opened to truly see God and himself, His gratitude emboldened him to serve. God purified him and called him to the prophetic office. Then he eagerly exclaimed, “Here am I; send me.” (Isaiah 6:8) He was truly transformed.
Prayer is a privilege for which we should be grateful. In essence, prayer affords flawed humanity the opportunity to have an audience with the God of the universe. God has no rival. God has no equal. He is omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, preeminent, infallible, immutable, eternal, and a Mastermind. He is Royalty. The Earth and everything within it belong to Him. He sits in the circle of the Earth. Heaven is His throne, and the Earth is His footstool (Isaiah 66:1). He called light out of darkness and created the universe. Everything created was created by Him–without Him, nothing was made. He is Sovereign and upholds the world by the power of His Word. And we have an audience with Him. Perhaps you are facing life’s challenges or you’re experiencing a season of transition. Maybe you don’t feel that you have anything to be grateful for; you’ve been dealt a bad hand. Your feelings are valid; it is true that life is sometimes difficult and unfair. I want to encourage you to see God in the shadows. David declares, “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me.” (Psalm 23:4a ) Know that God (His presence, His power, and His resources) is with you. You are never alone. Focus on what you have to be grateful for rather than your life challenge.

2. A Posture of Humility
The posture of humility calls us to prayer. We come boldly to God’s throne because we realize how desperately we need Him. We realize that He alone is God and beside Him there is no other. We realize that He is the source and solution of all things. Simultaneously, we recognize that we are limited in our ability and understanding. We acknowledge that He is our Creator and He deserves honor and reverence. Having the right perspective and posture of humility changes everything. The Apostle James and the Apostle Peter declare that “God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble (James 4:6 NKJV).” The Apostle James continues, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up (James 4:10 NKJV).”
Humility moves God to action; God is near those who live from a posture of humility. God Himself declares multiple times in scripture that He is near the heartbroken and repentant. Contrary to popular belief, God does not require perfection. He requires a pliable and repentant heart. The Prophet Isaiah writes, “For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: 'I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” (Isaiah 57:15 NKJV) God exchanges His healing presence for the sacrifice of a contrite and humble spirit. God creates a divine encounter when we embody a posture of humility. It is then that He revives our spirits and transforms our souls.
The presence of the Lord breeds humility. In His presence, there’s fullness of joy, and at His right hand there are pleasures forever (Psalm 16:11). There is safety and Heaven itself in God’s presence. The prophet Isaiah had a rapture-worthy encounter in God’s presence. He saw the Lord seated upon His throne in His holiness. He then saw how unholy he was. He proclaimed, “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts (Isaiah 6:5 NKJV).” When Isaiah saw God, he realized how truly flawed he was; he was able to see how unworthy he was in God’s presence and how truly worthy of honor and reverence God was. The same happens with us. The closer we draw to God in prayer, the greater our posture of humility.

3. A Posture of Partnership
Prayer is a tool that gives humanity access to POWER through partnership because, in essence, prayer is a direct connection to an Omnipotent Source. Prayer is not only a vehicle for manifesting the impossible, but it also fosters a loving relationship between God and mankind. Through communication and intimate exchange, humanity grows to know and love God. Everyone has this opportunity in this Dispensation of Grace through prayer. God says, “Call to me and I will answer.” (Jeremiah 33:3) This is a promise from the Promise Keeper. Paul declares that whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:13). This is a clarion call to humanity to communicate with its Creator and partner with God for assistance and salvation.
God calls humanity to partnership through prayer. We partner with God in order to fulfill His will on Earth. In other words, our ask calls the invisible will of God into reality. God says whatever the believer asks in the name of Jesus will be done (Matthew 21:22). This is nearly a blank check. It’s like God is saying to us, “Just connect to the power source via communication with a posture of gratitude, humility, and partnership, and it will be done.” Prayer is power governed by God-given boundaries mapped out in His Word. The prayers of the righteous make much available (James 5:16). The self-sufficient God can do everything alone, yet He has decided to use prayer as a tool for partnership with humanity to fulfill His plan. When we realize our role in bringing the agenda of Heaven to Earth through prayer, everything changes.
Partnering with God through prayer births supernatural and natural change. The impact of prayer changes the trajectory of souls in this life and in the life to come. Prayer alters one’s destiny for generations to come. Scripture declares that the prayers of a righteous person are effective and can make many things available to us. (James 5:16) Through prayerful partnership, miracles are performed, bodies and minds are healed, souls are comforted, and delivered from spiritual bondage. Danger is averted and protection is granted. Through prayer, souls receive salvation. They are translated from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light.
When we as believers practice the three postures of gratitude, humility, and partnership, our prayers bring Heaven to Earth. These prayer postures facilitate a supernatural exchange. As we pray, God transforms humanity (Earth), individually and collectively, to reflect the image of Heaven (God). God, who embodies Heaven, dwells with humanity. His presence comforts, heals, and transforms humanity. He guards our lives and restores our souls. Simultaneously, we partner with God to accomplish His will and purpose on the Earth. Moved by these three postures, God acts to fulfill His promises in the lives of humanity and to effect change for His Kingdom.
