'Lost' Star Evangeline Lilly Reveals Why She Stepped Away From Hollywood: 'God Has a Plan for My Life'

Canadian actress and author Evangeline Lilly has been known for her contributions to hit shows and films like “Lost,” “Ant-Man,” and “The Hobbit” since 2004. Since 2020, however, the wildly successful actor has stepped back from Hollywood to pursue God’s calling on her life.

Though her decision to step back was six years ago, Lilly explains she’s never forgotten or regretted that choice. For many, the life of a movie star is a dream. Why give it up? But before Lilly became an actress, she wanted to become a missionary, humanitarian, or diplomat.

Studying political science and international relations, she told FaithWire she just “wanted to make the world a better place.”

She continued, “There are many people who will claim that actors are making the world a better place, that they’ve had an impact on their lives. But…I’ve always wanted a much more hands-on impact. I’ve done 22 years of hands-on humanitarian work in Rwanda.”

Beyond helping people heal, Lilly added that she’d love to invest in the quiet life: “I love telling stories, but I’d like to tell stories of my own instead of being in front of the camera,” she said. “I’d much prefer a quieter position. I’ve always hated being famous. I never made any secrets about that. I’ve always said being famous is the cost of the wealth that you can get as an actor. Like that’s what you pay for — the wealth.”

Choosing to totally surrender and trust God with her future, Lilly has kickstarted her dedication to the faith by helping with a faith-based project. “Legend of Destruction,” a film that tells the “story of the Jewish revolt against Rome, which ended with the destruction of the Temple in the year 70.”

Though Lilly gave up power, influence, and potential wealth when she left Hollywood, she notes that the decision was made with “great conviction.” Alongside moments of fear, Lilly explained that it’s also been a sweet time of coming back to her roots.
