7 Ways to Maintain Spiritual Resolve in Hard Seasons

I was emotionally spent. “Why?” kept ringing in my mind like an annoying gnat bumping into my face. I had come to the end of myself. I couldn’t strategize a way to fix my situation. This level of vulnerability and uncertainty was frustrating. I experienced disappointment, loss, and emotional rollercoasters that had me dizzier than any ride a theme park could construct. I was stuck in emotional despair. My perspective of His everlasting love and compassion was skewed by my scars, yet I loved God. How could I rise from this depth of spiritual desperation to live in hope again? It’s funny how God speaks in response to our deepest cries. He used a tree to remind me to be resolute in my thinking and trust in Him. When I look at trees, I see stability and strength. I want my life to reflect the same thing, don’t you? Let’s look at someone in the scriptures who experienced disappointment, loss, and emotional upheavals in spite of a deep resolve to follow God’s leading.

David, the beloved king in the lineage of Jesus, wrote Psalm 52 after he had been betrayed by an onlooker in the temple. Because of the witness’s report, David subsequently saw God’s priests killed because of him. He certainly understood how uncertainty felt. During this time, his enemy, King Saul, was seeking to kill him. Psalm 52:8,9 AMPC

“But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in and confidently rely on the loving-kindness and the mercy of God forever and ever. I will thank You and confide in You forever, because You have done it [delivered me and kept me safe]. I will wait on, hope in, and expect in Your name, for it is good, in the presence of Your saints (Your kind and pious ones).”

Spiritual resolve is the ability to remain rooted in God when disappointment, fear, grief, and uncertainty try to shake your faith. This article draws from Psalm 52:8–9 to show seven practical ways believers can stay steady, hopeful, and spiritually grounded in hard seasons.

What Does Spiritual Resolve Mean?

Spiritual resolve means staying rooted in God with steady trust, even when your emotions are shaken, and your circumstances feel uncertain. It does not mean pretending you are unaffected by pain. It means choosing to remain anchored in God’s character, promises, and presence when life feels unstable.

Psalm 52:8,9 AMPC gives a practical approach to maintaining our spiritual resolve, much like a tree. Let’s look at seven ways we can stand just like a tree when the “winds” and “storms” of everyday life or traumatic experiences hit us hard.

1. Say Who God Says You Are

“But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God…”

God says I am a flourishing olive tree, a beacon of peace and prosperity, but my emotions weren’t reflecting this at all. It seems odd that an olive tree would be in the house of God, but this actually explains the intimacy with God that is required for an unshakeable resolve. During the tug of war between trusting God to resolve the crisis and imagining ways to fix it in my own strength and timetable, I have to pause and open my mouth to say what HE says!

Our relationship with God is our foundation for a strong root system. Without constant intimacy and a nurtured relationship with God, we will never understand His faithfulness in spite of challenges. The olive tree speaks to us personally. Use these verbal affirmations to be reminded of your spiritual status:

  •  “Like the olive tree, I have peace.”
  •  “Like the olive tree, I have prosperity.”
  •  “Like the olive tree, I have longevity.”
  •  “Like the olive tree, I have stability.”
  •  “Like the olive tree, I have endurance.”

2. Trust and Rely on God

“I trust in and confidently rely on the loving-kindness and the mercy of God forever and ever.”

How is this possible when the crisis and loss feel like flood waters roaring through my imagination, trying to uproot my faith? The currents are too swift to slow my mind down. But God is steady. He centers me in His Word or whispers words of comfort when I utter a small prayer. What does “we trust in and confidently rely on” mean? It means I get to depend on His unwavering integrity, not my fickle attempt to trust my choices. When I look at God’s track record in the Bible and in my personal sphere of experience, I see that I can lean on Him with certainty. God offers me security and a safe space to stand firm regardless of what is going on.

While He is holding me up, His enduring love is steadying my propensity to bolt. My root system stays intact. God’s mercy reminds us that He won’t leave us like this, but He will shield us from life’s storms. God is unwavering, and His character of Truth causes us to be unwavering, too. Lean into Him. He won’t stagger at one promise He’s made to you!

3. Choose Thankfulness

“I will thank You…” Don’t get me wrong, I learned the art of thankfulness by going through uncertainty and fear of not knowing the “next steps”!

I’ve experienced emotional trauma, but the resolve of being thankful in spite of my circumstances gave me peace that God was in control. Thankfulness is a choice. The Hebrew word for thankfulness is yadah, which means to confess, praise, and glorify. We confess that we can’t do anything without God. We praise Him with a sacrificial worship in spite of the situation. God is worthy of all the glory, regardless of how we feel. We place our priority in Him when we offer an attitude of thankfulness. Thankfulness is never overrated! The power of thankfulness elevates us and those around us!! I often hear people ask, “How are you?” When I respond, “I’m thankful,” instead of “I’m good,” it causes those around me to reflect on their own blessings! Thankfulness changes our mood, environment, and perspective!

4. Confide in the Lord

“I will thank You and confide in You forever,...”

Verse 9 of Psalm 52 offers another vital strategy for maintaining a spiritual resolve that enables us to thrive. We understand the value of a trusted confidant. God created that yearning to share our thoughts, struggles, joys, and sorrows with someone else. If we hold it in, we suffer emotionally and oftentimes physically. God really wants us to confide in Him first. We call this “prayer”. But it’s more than that. It’s a relationship and communion with our Heavenly Father. The Hebrew word sem, for name, means to summon Yahweh by name for help. We tell God what’s going on, even though He already knows. Our time of calling on Him affirms that we trust Him. Intimate time with the Lord, telling Him your “secrets”, causes everything else to come into proper alignment with His plan.

5. Remember What God Has Already Done

“....You have done it [delivered me and kept me safe].”

When my life seemed to take a topsy-turvy dive due to emotional and relational upheaval, God came to my rescue. The Hebrew word for “done it” is asa. Asa means that God builds us up, He prepares us, and He is careful to carry out His perfect plan. His interventions in my life can’t be counted, but the assurance in knowing that He is always for me is comforting. God truly delivers. Take the time to remember what God has done. God delights in you! Not because of what you’ve done or tried to accomplish in your own efforts, but because of who He is!

6. Trust God to Sustain You

I will wait on, hope in and expect in Your Name, for it is good…”

Waiting is not easy, but it is absolutely necessary for God to fulfill His purpose and plan in our lives. What do we do while we wait? We actively engage in hope and expectation! Remember Christmas Eve as a child? That wait seemed endless, but I dreamed of the toys and goodies that would be under the tree! I knew that my daddy and I would be watching the clock as it ticked 12:00 a.m., so we could tear into the wrappings and toss bows before daylight dawned!

Not only do we wait on the Lord, but we also hope in the Lord. Hope means “to want something to happen or be the case, dream of, cling to the mere possibility”. Hope is connected to our faith so that we stand unwavering in the “mere possibility” of what has been promised by God.

Layered within verse 9 is the next part: “...expect in Your Name, for it is good”. Our expectancy is in God! We expect Him to do all that He has promised, regardless of how the circumstances look right now. The character of the Lord is good or tob in the Hebrew language. It means that God is so good that He flourishes. His reserve of goodness continues on and on! Expect His goodness to overflow in spite of everything else.

7. Stay Connected to Godly Community

7. Stay Connected to Godly Community

“...in the presence of Your saints (Your kind and pious ones).”

Where can you flourish and allow your roots to produce a strong olive tree? Not only in God’s Presence, but in the presence of fellow believers. Those who know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior can be close confidants because they, too, trust God with their lives. You are not alone! God has surrounded you with a “root system” or community that will help you thrive! When roots grow together, they provide greater stability for the tree. That principle works for us as well. Being connected with others whose focus is on God makes you more mindful of God in a deeper way. If you are not connected to a community that supports your spiritual resolve, may I encourage you to ask God to show you how to find fellowship that meets your unique needs?

Psalm 52:8,9 AMPC But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in and confidently rely on the loving-kindness and the mercy of God forever and ever. I will thank You and confide in You forever, because You have done it [delivered me and kept me safe]. I will wait on, hope in, and expect in Your name, for it is good, in the presence of Your saints (Your kind and pious ones).

How Can You Practice Spiritual Resolve This Week?

Spiritual resolve is built in daily choices, not only dramatic moments. This week, choose one practice from Psalm 52:8–9 to focus on intentionally. You might speak God’s truth over yourself each morning, thank Him before you complain, write down one way He has already been faithful, or reach out to a trusted believer for prayer and encouragement. Resolve grows as we keep returning to God in small, steady acts of trust.

If you have ever wavered in your faith or in your trust in God’s ability to see beyond the surface of your pain, remember you are a “tree” rooted and supported. Now you stand steady, firm, and resolute as the “olive tree” that remains in His presence. Let’s give God the opportunity to shine His glory in us by being spiritually resolved. How might you use these steps to remain resolved when your thoughts and emotions are in a tailspin?
