Listen to this beautiful rendition of the hymn ‘How Great Thou Art’ by Dolly Parton and featuring a Hawaiian children's choir.
“Oh Lord, my God, when I, in awesome wonder consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee, how great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee, how great Thou art, how great Thou art”
What a great video! Dolly sings the first verse by herself, and then the children’s choir joins in during the chorus. What sweet faces and wonderful voices!
And it is not just the voices in this video that are beautiful. The scenes of Hawaii that flash across the screen will also take your breath away. From the cliffside mountains, sparkling oceans, stunning waterfalls, colorful rainbows, and majestic sunsets – it just leaves you in awe and reminds you of how beautiful God’s creation is.
The hymn ‘How Great Thou Art’ had its beginning in 1886 in southern Sweden. It was written in the home of Carl Boberg, who was an author, editor, and member of the Swedish Parliament from 1912 to 1931. He wrote it as a poem, and the words were later set to a Swedish folk tune.
It was in 1907 when Manfred von Glehn translated the hymn into German, and five years later, a Russian pastor, Ivan Prokhanoff, made a Russian adaptation. And then, in the early 1920s, English missionaries Rev. and Mrs. Stuart K. Hine were in Poland when they learned the Russian version of ‘How Great Thou Art.’ Rev. Hine ended up writing the original English lyrics for the hymn that we know in the United States today.
