Sleep for the Soul That Won’t Settle
Your Nightly Prayer
TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.” - Psalm 4:8 NLT
SOMETHING TO PONDER
Many times, as I’ve lain down and prepared to rest, I’ve called out a desperate plea to God to help me sleep through the night. Exhaustion takes over from the sheer weight of an overactive mind, and I know if I wake during the night, those thoughts will activate again. Instead of the precious rest I long for, I face another night lying awake for hours. Is there hope for me when my anxious mind won’t allow me to sleep well?
Tonight’s verse from Psalm 4 provides a promise of peace, sleep, and safety from the Lord. I love how the psalmist began with the two words, “In peace…” It’s as if he understood the need for supernatural peace when our whirlwind of thoughts affects our ability to get a good night’s rest. And the best news is, we don’t have to search for this peace. Jesus gave us the priceless gift of his unending peace when he said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)
Jesus not only offered us his peace, but he also prayed for his disciples’ safety before leaving this earth to be with the Father, “...Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.” (John 17:15). Jesus still intercedes on our behalf. He loves us and wants us to have the goodness of rest to refresh our minds, bodies, and spirits. Will we accept his gifts and trust him, knowing our safety is in God’s mighty hands?
There is no greater antidote for a restless night’s sleep than God’s promises of peace and safety. Tonight, let’s offer a bedtime prayer for our souls that refuse to settle down. We long for deeper rest, and Jesus is right here with us, arms stretched forward. He is the answer. Let’s pray.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Dear God,
Thank you for your promise of rest. Your Word says, in peace, I will be able to lie down and sleep. Help me let go of the cares that weigh heavily on my mind and replace them with your peace. Help me understand that I am safe in your loving arms. Untangle my whirlwind of anxious thoughts, Lord. I give them all to you; I trust you with my life and the lives of my loved ones. I am in your hands, and there is no better, safer place to be. Help me fall asleep and stay asleep. If I wake up during the night, help my mind to stay relaxed in your presence so that I can continue to rest until morning. You are good, faithful, and trustworthy.
In Jesus’ name I pray,
Amen.
