Your Nightly Prayer

TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE

“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him.” - Psalm 62:5

SOMETHING TO PONDER

The slow drift of an unrested soul! It happens over time. We say yes to one more responsibility, one more person who needs us, one more crisis to manage, one more email, one more meeting. Before long, we discover we are empty. Our bodies are trying to keep up, but our hearts have forgotten how to rest.

David understood this feeling oh-so-well. Psalm 62 wasn’t written from a beach in Mexico. It was written from a place of pure pressure. He was surrounded by enemies; he was deeply misunderstood and weighed down by the burden of leadership. Yet, in the middle of all that, he speaks to himself, “Yes, my soul, find rest in God.” I think David was fully aware of where true “rest” came from. His Father. I think it’s noteworthy here to see that David did not wait until things in his life calmed down before resting. I find myself saying, when this is over- this project, this conference, this school year- then we can rest. David was intentional about his heart being in a posture of returning to the place where true rest could be found. He was preaching to his soul! Not because His circumstances changed, but because His God never changed.

Do you think of rest as more than sleep?  We often think of rest as a good ol’ nap or a weekend getaway. While physical rest is important, the kind of rest David speaks of is deeper. The Hebrew word for rest is this idea of being still, quiet, and waiting confidently. It gives us this beautiful picture: no matter what we face, we no longer feel responsible for controlling everything.

When our minds begin to race with thoughts like, "Did I do enough?" or What happens if I step away? This passage reminds us that He already has this job. Because hope has a source. David goes on to say, “My hope comes from Him.” It doesn’t come from finally getting caught up. It comes from resting in God, even in our circumstances, even when life is full. Just as David did, we can know that our security, our salvation, and our hope are found in Christ alone. He can work while we rest in Him.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Jesus, even when we feel stretched too thin, you see the burdens we carry and the responsibilities we hold. Forgive me for thinking that all of these depend on me. Teach me to rest in you, for my soul to experience the rest only you can bring. Help me release all the things in my life that steal my peace and joy. I’m thankful that you never grow weary and that you sustain me. In Jesus’ name, Amen

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE ON

  1. Where have I been seeking rest?

  2. What burdens have I been carrying as if everything depended on me?

  3. What would my life look like if I let my soul find rest in Jesus?
