Last week, we studied Matthew 5: 6. We looked at what it means to be blessed; to hunger and thirst; to have righteousness; and finally, how we feel when we are satisfied – filled to overflowing.
As you reflect on the things we learned, I want to share some final thoughts, written specifically on the text we studied last week. This beautiful poem and prayer was penned by Macrina Wiederkehr in her book of prayers and reflections entitled, Seasons of Your Heart.
May these words bless you as much as they did me:
Blessed Are You Who Hunger and Thirst for Justice: You Shall Be Satisfied
“But what is Justice? And what is righteousness?
And who is that hungry?
I cried out to the whole world.
We are, the people called back.
We have spent all our money on things that don’t last.
We are hungry with a hunger that is deep inside.
We are hungry with a hunger that won’t be silent.
We are hungry for something whose name is
We are hungry for all that matters
For all that is lasting
For all that is right.
We are hungry for
and answered prayers
and kept promises.
We are so hungry cried the people.
Then trembling beneath the burden of such a hunger, I asked:
What have you done to your prophets?
The people grew silent and the silence became a song.
Then someone stepped out of the crowd.
We are too sophisticated to stone our prophets, he said
and so we just ignore them and our hunger deepens.
If you are wondering what to pray for
We are hungry for new hearts.
I bowed my head in the city streets
And I wept with grief and joy
I announced Good News to all who would listen
and the news was this:
Blessed are you if you are aware of so deep a hunger
For God will surely feed you.”
“For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.”
Psalm 107: 9
Lord of Creation
“Lord of Creation,
moulder of our fragile clay,
Shape us in your image.
Spin us round if you must
until we’re dizzy;
Hollow us out, if you must,
until we’re empty
of all that is false and useless.
Fill us daily with living water
that we may carry your life
to a world dying of thirst.”
