Occupation Versus Vocation
by David Chadwick

Because work is cursed, a monotony and boredom arise throughout your day. As a result, you just go through the motions. It’s meaningless and robotic.

Work has become a mere occupation. It’s something you do for five days during the week to allow you to get to your weekend. You fervently work for five days in order to have two for your own leisure.

When work merely occupies your time, occupation turns into the word to describe your work.

But that should not be the case for followers of Jesus. Jesus came not only to forgive your sins, but to give you a new meaning and purpose – and that extends to your work.

For Christians, work should never be a mere occupation, but a majestic vocation.

What is the meaning of the word vocation? Its root comes from the word voice. It implies a spoken calling from God.

When people decide to follow Jesus, work changes into a vocation – a calling from Jesus. You know that your workplace is exactly where you’re supposed to be. Jesus is calling you to serve him and others in whatever way he directs.

How might your day be different if you approached your work as a vocation instead of an occupation?

If you believe this, then your hours at work won’t be spent merely occupying your time until the weekend. Rather, they will evolve into opportunities to serve God and others in the place where he has called you.

This new attitude will dramatically change your perception of your work. You will enjoy your hours at work more.

And you will be mightily used by God like never before.
