Generosity in Leviticus
By David Chadwick

God chose Israel to be a holy, different, and set-apart nation. He placed them in the promised land, surrounded by godless and immoral people. His chosen people would be like a bright diamond placed against the backdrop of black velvet. They’d shine like the noonday sun. Their holiness and God’s blessings and favor to them would then draw the lost around them to faith.

One of the distinctives to which God called his people in Leviticus was generosity. He demanded a tithe from his people (Leviticus 27:30-33). This 10-percent gift was a first-fruit, off-the-top gift to the Lord. It symbolized a person’s best gift. It realized that God was the most important part of their lives and that he should never be forgotten.

God wanted first place in their hearts. He wanted the best they could give. He did not want their leftovers.

God wanted to create a people who were generous, not stingy. He wanted generosity to overflow from a grateful heart for all he had done for them.

The Lord desires this from Christians as well.

Ask yourself these questions: Is God first in your life? Do you give him the best of your time, talents, and treasures? Does being generous describe you?

God has been excessively generous to us. He gave his best to us in his Son, Jesus, who died on the cross to give us the gift of eternal life.

How can we not be generous in return?
