To answer before listening— that is folly and shame.

Thoughts for the Day
Anger can make us poor listeners. Instead of listening to understand, we listen for an opportunity to defend ourselves or prove our point.
But understanding someone does not mean agreeing with them. Listening simply communicates, “You matter enough for me to hear you.”
Sometimes conflict begins to change when we stop trying to win and start trying to understand. God can use listening to replace assumptions with understanding and hostility with compassion.
Consider This . . .
Think about someone you have difficulty communicating with. Could you clearly explain that person's point of view?
The next time conflict develops, try asking, “Can you help me understand?” Then listen without immediately correcting or defending yourself.
You may discover that sometimes the first step toward peace isn't speaking—it's listening.
Prayer
Lord, make me a better listener. Help me seek understanding before defending myself and give me wisdom to respond with grace. In Jesus’ name…
