Today's Scripture
"Then let us no more criticize and blame and pass judgment on one another, but rather decide and endeavor never to put a stumbling block or an obstacle or a hindrance in the way of a brother." Romans 14:13 AMP

Thoughts for Today
We supposed to encourage one another. And yet so often, we judge. We blame. We criticize.

We aren't going to agree with one another about everything. (In fact, maybe we won't agree about much!) We are all going to be offended; and offend others. We are all going to make mistakes. That's a given. But we have a choice about how we will respond to the things we don't like or agree with in others. We can judge. We can criticize. We can blame. Or . . . we can respect their opinions. We can try to see things from their perspective. We can overlook and forgive offenses. When they have erred, we can go to them in love and help them get back on track.

When unbelievers look at us, they too often see us pointing fingers at one another, criticizing not only individuals but other denominations or Christian ministries who do things differently than we would. They don't see a picture of Christ's love . . . and so they are repelled, rather than attracted.

Consider this …
Are you standing in judgment? Is there someone you have been criticizing and blaming? Ask God to show you any judgmental attitudes you are harboring. And then, repent. And show love. Find ways to encourage and help the one you have been judging.

Aren't you glad Jesus loves you even when you are at your worst? Are you willing to do the same for others?

Prayer
Father, I know sometimes I am quick to judge; and criticize. Please forgive me. Help me to see others the way you do and to respond to them in your love. In Jesus' name …

These thoughts were drawn from … Understanding Depression: Overcoming Despair through Christ by Donald G. Miles, Ed.D. This study deals with depression, a condition common throughout the world, and is suggested for use in support groups and Christian counseling.

  • Understanding what depression is and how it affects relationships
  • Understanding the relationship between depression and spiritual warfare
  • Ways to fight depression with scripture, prayer and mutual support
  • Understanding the special prayer needs of depressed persons
  • How to pray for healing and what to expect
  • Serves as a powerful evangelistic tool by providing a way to minister to people's felt needs and then lead them to Christ

Note: This curriculum was written especially for small groups, and we encourage people to use it that way. However, it can also be used effectively as a personal study for individuals or couples.
