Hard Work?
By: Rick Boxx
November 2, 2012

A Parade magazine survey discovered that 51% of the 26,000 people polled believe that the way people actually get ahead at work is due to internal politics. Only 27% believed it came from hard work.

If that many people perceive the path to the top is through being politically savvy, then I fear it could be a self-perpetuating prophecy. This could lead many to conclude that they should invest their time undermining their peers and brown-nosing their boss, rather than honing their skills.

A better approach may be to apply Proverbs 27:18, “He who tends a fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who looks after his master will be honored.”

Focusing on hard work while caring for your boss’ interest may be a better path than playing politics.
