A Servant’s Heart

Years ago, I helped interview multiple people for an executive director role for a new nonprofit organization. Some were highly qualified, but seemed to quickly focus the discussion on pay and benefits.

We, however, were looking for a leader with a servant’s heart, not someone looking for a better paycheck. We finally found the perfect candidate. She was passionate about the cause and willing to move to Kansas City, even before money was discussed!

In 1 Kings 3:9, instead of asking for money or power Solomon answered God by saying, “So give your servant an understanding heart to judge your people to discern between good and evil.” God was pleased!

Psalm 86:10 reminds us, “For You are great and do wondrous deeds; You alone are God.”

If you desire to become, or hire, a servant leader, focus on caring about others first, before self interest.
