Changing Industry Standards

Our “Ask Rick” section on our website invites people to seek counsel about their workplace issues. Recently, Carolyn emailed about her new job at an automobile dealership.

After a few weeks, Carolyn questioned whether some of the business practices common to the industry would be problematic with her faith. Her ultimate question was, “Are there some industries that Christians should avoid?”

In Luke 3:14, John the Baptist was asked by a soldier how he should respond to John’s message of repentance. John said, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”

John didn’t tell him to quit being a soldier. He told him to act in a manner consistent with God’s Word. When possible, stay and shine light into the darkness of your industry.
