Over All Things
Read Ephesians 1:22-23 (ESV)
And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
Who is really in charge of the church?
If you were to take a poll asking who makes the rules regarding the church you would get a wide variety of answers. The Pope? The head of each separate denomination? The local board of elders? The head pastor?
But the question really shouldn’t be that hard to answer. The answer is Jesus Christ. According to Paul in today’s verse, God placed Jesus as the head of His church. God gave Jesus authority “over all things” regarding His church. All things are beneath His sovereignty. Paul reiterates this just as clearly in Colossians 1:18: “And he is the head of the body, the church…”
I often see headlines that read as if human beings are in charge of the church. They say things like “The Pope Has Declared…” or “Leadership Announces the Church’s Stance on…”. Certainly, church structure has leadership and that leadership is responsible for making decisions on behalf of the body of Christ. But church leadership is under the authority of Jesus Christ. As members of the body of Christ, we are all under His authority.
Friends, Christ is the head of the church. He is the ultimate authority. Through His Word, He has revealed His will for the church. We should already know where the church should stand on the issues that it faces. Whether you are in a place of leadership in the Christian community or not, you are under the authority and headship of Jesus Christ. He is head over all things and all people.
Jesus, I submit to Your authority in my life. I pray that You would direct the decisions of those who are in leadership positions. Give them the courage to follow Your Word and Your will regarding the issues that face the church today. Give them wisdom and discernment to lead effectively and righteously. Amen.
