The God Who Sees
By Dawn Neely
And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. Hebrews 4:13 NAS
I can remember my Mama telling me when I was a child, “You may think you get away with things for a time, but if your sins do not find you out, your Mama will!”
She was exactly right. I never got away with anything! I did not purposely set out to disobey my parents, but when I submitted to the temptation to tempt my fate, I always got caught! I had a reverential fear of my parents long before I understood the fear of God.
So why does the Bible say, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom?” Psalm 111:10a (NAS). God does not want us to be afraid of Him but rather to gain an understanding through prayer, HIs word and experiences that He is holy and worthy of our worship and devotion. He alone knows our heart. He knows our frame and the sin that so easily entangles us. There is nothing hidden from His sight. He knows us so well, yet still loves us.
Our relationship with God is so much more than imagining a holy judge just waiting to “zap us” when we go astray. He sees us so He can guide us and lead us into the paths of righteousness. Notice the rewards of a life bent toward obedience. “For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, and His ears attend to their prayers.” 1 Peter 3:12 (NAS). What a wonderful promise! God has done so much for us. He sent His only Son to die for our sins. He made it possible for us to experience faith, an abundant life on earth and an eternity with Him in glory.
I recently saw one of my grandsons caring so tenderly for his little sister. He was not aware of my presence just outside her bedroom door as he helped her pick up her clothes and put them away. No one asked him to do that. It was an act of love toward his sister. It was a beautiful moment to witness. Our Heavenly Father desires to see us trust and obey out of love for Him and one another. The knowledge that one of the names of God is “The One Who sees” should call us to a life spent before God to illicit His pleasure and exhibit our thanksgiving.
We should ask ourselves each day; have I been a tear or a twinkle in the eyes of God?
Do you remember this song from your childhood?
“Oh be careful little eyes what you see? Oh be careful little hands what you do? For the Father up above is looking down in love, Oh be careful little mouth what you say.”
This simple truth still applies in our lives.
Dear Father God, Help us each day to be mindful that your eyes are ever upon us. May we live our lives before You and others that will bring pleasure to your heart and glory and honor to Your name, In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
