Now listen to me!
“Now listen to me!” As a parent I’ve said it a million times and now when my grandkids visit and it’s our turn to take over the controls when their dad and mom go out for a break, I use the same words to get their attention. But why should they listen to me?
The wise father in Proverbs does give the call to listen, but he roots this demand in the inspired wisdom he says he can give, and he also predicts there will be a strong reward for obeying.
“My son, listen is to the discipline of your father and don’t forsake the torah (the instructions) of your mother for they are a garland to grace your head and a necklace around your neck.” - Proverbs 1:8,9
This father doesn’t simply demand obedience. His words are connected with the purpose of his book “to internalize skill in life which comes through discipline” (Proverbs 1:2), and he guarantees that obedience will have rich rewards.
LORD, help my grown children to remember what I taught them that is true to Your instructions in Proverbs and through Your Spirit empower them to obey today. Use me as a grandfather to pass on the information that will cause my grandchildren, as they mature, to be respected just as an athlete is respected when they earn a gold medal, only Proverbs’ rewards are far more valuable
