Almost every Wednesday I meet a friend I’ve known since 1973 for lunch. He’s the president of a local business, a skilled motor cycle rider, and a godly elder in his church. In the midst of a busy week, this time together renews my spirit and keeps me going to the end of the week.
The resurrected Jesus knew the importance of a power lunch with friends. In fact, Luke tells us that He used time around the table with His disciples to not only prove that He had definitely risen in the body from the grave (Lk. 24:41-42), but He also told them about an incredible gift that would soon arrive from His Father.
“And while eating together around the table, Jesus ordered them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for the Father’s promise. ‘Remember hearing from me about this? John the Baptist baptized with water but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.’” Acts 1:4-5
Jesus reminds us that John the Baptist predicted that the Messiah would baptize not with water but with the Holy Spirit (Lk. 3:16-17). Soon Jesus would prove that He was the Messiah promised in the Jewish Scriptures by pouring the gift of the Holy Spirit upon His disciples—a Spirit who can do a lot more than simply renew our enthusiasm to make it to the end of the week.
The Jewish Scriptures predicted that God would pour out His Spirit upon His sons and daughters (Joel 2:28-32, Isaiah 32:15 and 44:3). Now Jesus tells His first century band that this gift would soon come and Jesus is still pouring out His gift upon those who believe in Him.
LORD, thanks that I don’t need to depend only upon the refreshment of eating with a good friend but that Your Spirit pours strength and refreshment into my life moment by moment. Help me today to rely more upon Your Presence in my life.
Note: If the resurrected Christ took time to eat with His disciples, we need to take time around the table with our brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s especially important for us to eat with our brothers and sisters across ethnic barriers as racial tension heats up.
