Ready for the LORD

Luke 1:13-17

Almost all the best sellers that speak about being touched by an angel or having an encounter of a heavenly kind talk about sweet warmth and love. In God’s Word direct contact with a supernatural being usually drives someone to their knees in terror. This was Priest Zechariah’s response to the appearance of the angel in the Temple and the first thing the angel had to do was to quiet the old man down.

“Now the angel said to him, ‘Don’t be afraid because your prayers have been heard. Elizabeth, your wife, will generate a son for you, and you will call his name, John. He will be your joy and delight, and many will join you in celebrating his birth. For he will be great before the LORD. He will not drink wine or beer. The Holy Spirit will fill him in the womb of his mother. Many of the sons of Israel will return to the LORD their God.  He will go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah. He will turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” Luke 1:13-17

Some of my students at Southern Bible have discovered that they had children as a result of illicit relationships during their teen years. Now they are in committed marriages. What about these children of their promiscuous youth? I have seen the power of the Spirit who does turn the hearts of fathers back to their children move these dads with incredible grace from their wives to do everything they can to father these newly discovered children. John the Baptist did announce a Savior who turns absentee fathers into engaged dads.

LORD, give strength to my students today who are seeking to father in blended families and also to reach out to newly discovered offspring. Thank you that the same Holy Spirit who was upon John the Baptist even in Elizabeth’s womb is still moving us dads and grandads to love our offspring and use us to prepare their hearts to receive Jesus the Messiah.

A Puzzle: How did Luke set you up for a future incident in his birth narrative? Write to Mary and me if you think you have the answer. Also share with us how the Spirit of God is moving in your heart toward your kids.
