A Young Mentoree
The class is titled “The Primacy Of The Minister’s Spiritual Life,” and I just finished grading my students. These doctoral students began the class last fall and one of their final assignments was to report on how they had connected with a younger believer and mentored them on how to develop a personal plan for maintaining personal intimacy with the Lord Jesus.
On the Second Missionary Journey as Paul and Silas revisited Derbe and then Lystra check out who they enlisted from the city of Lystra to join their missionary team. Why did Paul do this?
“And he came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A follower of Jesus was there in Lystra. His name was Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was Greek. He was well spoken of by the brothers at Lystra and Iconium, and Paul wanted him to come with them as part of his missionary team. He took Timothy and circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in the area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
As the Paul and Silas and Timothy then traveled from town to town, they challenged the believers to observe the decisions made by the apostles and elders of Jerusalem. Therefore the churches were strengthened in faith and grew daily in numbers.” Acts 16:1-5
If we track the story of Timothy in the rest of the New Testament, we discover that he becomes like a son to Paul. Near the end of Paul’s ministry he sent Timothy as a young pastor to strengthen the church of Ephesus (1 Timothy 2:2-3). Like Moses with Joshua, Elijah with Elisha, and Jesus with Peter, James, and John, Paul knew the importance of mentoring younger believers in the faith. And he didn’t do this in a formal classroom. He invited Timothy to travel with him and become a vital part of his missionary team.
LORD, some of my students are mentoring younger members in their churches, and one of the dads was challenged to help his own son who will soon be a teenager to come up with a plan to stay in Your Word, in prayer, and in fellowship with other believers. Use Paul’s example as a mentor to Timothy to challenge experienced believers reading this Devo to actively seek out a younger person they can mentor.
