The Dream Team
Even with super stars like Labron James, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry, the NBA finals have proven that to win, you need other members of the team to step up and be on their game. This is also true when it comes to serving together in Jesus’ Family.
I got to team with South Korean believers as I ministered with members of the Word Life Bible Institute staff on Jeju Island. About a week ago, I got to meet with Johnny, my black teammate, who helps me teach at Southern Bible, and I interviewed Marco and Ruthie to help close the message at Midlothian Bible Church. Ruthie has roots in Monterey and Marco was raised in the Spanish area of South Dallas.
In the first century the Apostle Paul already knew the power of a divers, multi-racial team. As he gathered funds to meet the pressing food shortages faced by the Jerusalem Church, count how many associates traveled with him to deliver the funds. (Note also that Luke, himself, is now traveling with the group.)
“Now Sapater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, also Timothy; also the Asians, Tychicus and Trophimus, were traveling with Paul. These went on ahead and were waiting for us at Troas. But after the Feast of Unleavened Bread, we sailed from Philippi and five days later joined them in Troas, where we stayed for seven days.” Acts 20:4-6
In Troas we will get a chance to see how Paul encouraged and exhorted a local group of believers, but his traveling companions show us that this Jew hung around with a lot of Greeks from wide-ranging areas and cities.
LORD, thanks for Paul’s emphasis on the team and thanks for all the teammates serving the Lord Jesus with us at Southern Bible, Dallas Theological Seminary, and in supporting Truth Encounter.
