An Accurate Prediction
Just like we dutifully watch the nightly weather report, in spite of the fact that we know that we can’t count on their predictions, we do the same with polls. But here is a prediction about the most important event in human history that was forecast repeatedly and then it happened.
In our devos Luke now invites us to join Jesus as He makes the final turn toward Jerusalem where the climax of the Story will take place. Looking back in the Story, Jesus has already gotten specific about what would happen. He would be rejected by the religious leaders, be murdered, and then be raised the third day (Lk. 9:22). He would be betrayed (Lk. 9:44-45), then experience a “baptism”(Lk. 12:49)—He would die in Jerusalem (Lk. 13:32-33). His own generation was going to reject Him (Lk. 17:25). He gets even more concrete.
“Now He summoned the Twelve and said to them, ‘Look, we are going to Jerusalem and all things will be fulfilled that were written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man. For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, mocked and insulted, spit upon, scourged and killed; then on the third day raised.’ But the Twelve didn’t understand for these things remained hidden from them and they did not comprehend what Jesus was saying.” Luke 18:31-34
At the close of Luke the risen Christ will open His disciples’ eyes, but at this point they remain in the dark. One thing is clear. Jesus knows exactly what the Jewish Scriptures predicted about the Messiah being handed over to the Gentiles and then killed (Daniel 9:26, cf. Isaiah 53). What amazes me is that He was willing to face this agonizing death on Friday because He knew resurrection was coming on Sunday.
LORD, sudden, horrible death strikes often unexpectedly, but You knew exactly what You were getting into when You came to this earth. Thanks for loving us so much that You kept moving toward Jerusalem and the cross, and there is no need for us not to get it this side of the resurrection. Open hearts to understand.
