“Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city the watchman stays awake in vain.” - Psalm 127:1
I thought my sleepless nights would be over now that our four kids are grown, out of the house, married, and have kids of their own. I was wrong, and it doesn’t help that in this Psalm Solomon is the father and grandfather who tells me not to be anxious as I work to see the next generations following the LORD. (Solomon’s son, Rehoboam, was a fool who destroyed the United Kingdom his father and grandfather worked so hard to build (1 Kings 12:16-16)
Solomon, however, still gets it right. All my day and night work trying to convince my children gets the response, “Dad, I don’t need another sermon from the preacher. I just need you to be my dad!” If I rest in the fact that the LORD gives my own kids the same freedom He gave me as I grew up and matured to respond to Him, then I can let Him take over as “watchman” in my family, especially during the night. Only then I can rest in these times of chaos and challenge.
LORD, my children and grandchildren need to see the justice, love, beauty, and truth that Your Spirit is still generating in my life and actions. Protect me from becoming an angry, threatened person who doesn’t leave space for Your Spirit to continue to work in my own life and in the lives of my kids and grandkids.
