The Ultimate In Healthcare

Acts 5:12-16

On Monday I met a sister in Christ for lunch. She reads the Devos religiously, passes them on to others, and has written many notes of encouragement. Like Barnabas, the Son of Encouragement, she’s a Daughter of Encouragement.

While we were talking, an old friend from the past came up. “How are you doing?” When he asked, I could see it in his eyes. He was dying to ask her about her short hair. Was it a trendy new style or something else?  “No, I didn’t cut off my beautiful locks for this crew cut on purpose. About a year ago, I was diagnosed with cancer, had it surgically removed, and then the intense chemo.  I lost my hair, but thanks to a ton of prayer, I’m cancer free at the moment and as you can see, my hair is coming back.”

Our discussion at lunch wasn’t about her cancer, but about questions she had about the bible and theology.  When we prayed at the end of our lunch, we thanked the Lord Jesus for her healing, but we also thanked him for the certainty that we are both headed for a future when we will have perfectly healthy bodies—bodies that will radiate with eternal life forever.

The miracles done by the first century Apostles give us glimpses of the powerful healing that Jesus will bring when He returns to establish His Kingdom on earth. They also verify that the inspired text these Apostles produced for us in the Bible can be trusted.

“Through the hands of the Apostles many signs and wonders happened among the people. And the believers were all united and met in the Portico of Solomon. And the rest of the people were afraid to join them, yet all held them in high esteem. In spite of this hesitancy to join, there were being added to the number of those who believe a large number of men and women.

Now as a result of the signs and wonders being done by the Apostles they carried the sick out on the streets and placed them on their mats and pallets so that possibly Peter’s shadow might fall upon some of them. Crowds also gathered from the surrounding towns. They carried their sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, and all were being healed.” Acts 5:12-16

Remember in Acts 3:19 how the Apostle Peter told the crowd that if they would only repent, turn to God and trust Jesus’ death and resurrection for forgiveness the “times of refreshing” would come? The Apostolic signs and wonders gave concrete evidence that the Apostles were telling the truth about Christ and his power to bring that ultimate day of restoration.

LORD, what a confidence to know that my friend has a far greater healing because of her faith in Jesus than even the present deliverance from cancer you’ve given her. A lot of us are passionate about the present healthcare debate, both pro and con. Help me to be even more passionate about helping others hear the Gospel so that they can enjoy a future where no one will need healthcare forever.
