The Big Divide

Acts 4:23-31

The bell has rung and the fight is on. One thing we can agree on is that Democrats and Republicans don’t get along and that conflict is the way the political game is played in Washington.

Now before you start stoning me because I brought up politics, I want you to consider that this U.S. political battle is small stuff. There’s a far bigger fight –Who has the right to rule the world?

In AD 33 only a few months after the crucifixion here’s the report Peter and John gave to their fellow believers after their hearing before the Jerusalem Sanhedrin. Listen to what they had to say and let’s see if we can discern the most fundamental conflict that’s still going on in the world.

“Now after Peter and John were released, they returned to their own and reported what the priests and the elders said to them. When their group heard the report they united and lifted up their voice to God, ‘Sovereign Lord, you made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them. You spoke through our father David’s mouth, by the Holy Spirit about your Son saying, ‘Why do the nations arrogantly rage and the people conspire together for such an empty purpose? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take their stand against the LORD and against His Anointed.

For in truth in this city Herod and Pontius Pilate, together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel assembled together to do whatever your hand and your plan purposed  beforehand to do. Now, LORD, take notice of their threats and give to your servants to speak your word with all boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and to perform signs and wonders through the Name of your Holy Son Jesus.’

Then the place where they were gathered was shaken and all were filled with the Holy Spirit and they spoke the Word of God with boldness.” Acts 4:23-31

The political divide in America is small time stuff compared to the conflict over denying Jesus and putting him on the cross. Pilate, the Roman Governor, and King Herod, the Roman puppet, in concert with the religious authorities, and the people all thought they had things their way.  Actually, a thousand years before, King David had predicted these events and this conflict, and God was writing the script.

This conflict over God’s Anointed is still going on. Before we allow the present anger over politics to boil up in our own hearts, we need to follow the lead of our brothers and sisters at the beginning of the Jesus Movement. They cried out in prayer for the Lord to give them boldness—boldness not to overthrow Herod, Pilate, or the Jewish religious leaders, but to courageously tell the truth about Jesus not only to the governmental and religious leaders, but to all.

LORD, thanks that you are still the Sovereign LORD. Help me not to get all caught up in political hostility, but to keep my focus on the real divide that separates, not just Americans, but every people group on earth—those who trust in your Son and those who reject him. A lot of people have certainly gotten bold about their political opinions. Help me to be bolder, but a lot kinder, as I present the truth about Jesus today.
