We’re Brothers!

Luke 3:23- 38

Nate and I met for breakfast yesterday morning at Denny’s. Several years ago Nate served in the Air Force as an enlisted man. I met him when he was in my brother Don’s cohort in the doctoral program at Southwestern Seminary. By that time Nate was a commissioned officer serving as a chaplain. He now pastorsa multi-racial church called Agape Community Fellowship in South Fort Worth.

Nate is African American, but more importantly we are related. When I read through Luke’s genealogy of Jesus, I observe that Luke traces it all the way back to Adam. According to the Bible, all human beings have a common father. His name is Adam, and Adam was created by God. More importantly, we are all under the same family curse of death because of Adam’s sin and because we sin just like him. No race is exempt, so there’s no room for feelings of superiority and pride. The amazing thing is that Luke’s genealogy stresses that God’s beloved Son chose to join this cursed human family. Because He did, Luke is going to go on and tell us how Jesus can save us. Nate and I both have received Jesus. Therefore, we are not only brothers because of Adam, but we are eternally brothers because of the blood of Jesus.

Luke 3:23 - “Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph….(v 38) the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.”

LORD, the presidential race demonstrates how racism can get hot and divide. Sadly, most of Your family of believers still huddles with only those of their own race, but thank you for churches like Nate’s that are struggling to turn this around.
