I’ve shared with you about Dr. Nate, my pastor friend, who is also a chaplain in the Air Force and is often deployed for several months at a time. As a colonel in the Air Force, he’s a detailed organizer, but one question I’ve never heard him ask his superior officers, “Where will I be pillowing my head when I’m deployed?”
Now I’m sure that the Air Force will take care of my friend, but when you receive orders in the military, you don’t worry about sleeping arrangements. The priority is the mission, not personal comfort. The same is true when it comes to joining Jesus in His mission for us to make disciples of every nation.
“And as they were going along the road, a man said to Him, ‘I will follow You wherever You go!’ Jesus said to him, ‘The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’ “ - Luke 9:57-58.
In a few weeks I leave for South Korea to teach. They do a good job taking care of me, but my priority can’t be where from night to night I might sleep. What the Lord commands is that I focus on what He wants me to teach from His Word while I’m there. Pray that I will be like Colonel Nate—focused on the top priority of the mission, responding in obedience to Jesus, my Commander.
LORD, for several months Mary and I didn’t know exactly where we would be sleeping as we anticipated our home to be bulldozed to make room for a new shopping center. Now you’ve given us a beautiful home, more than we could have imagined, but help us to hold it loosely, realizing that we need to stay focused on Your mission to reach others for Your Kingdom.
