The Greatest?

Luke 9:46-48

Who would ever believe that debates about who has the skills to govern the most powerful nation on earth would degenerate into “My wife is beautiful? Yours is ugly.” But before we throw up our hands and declare that it’s the end of the world, take a look at the fight that broke out among Jesus’ disciples about who’s the greatest right after Jesus predicted He was headed for the cross.

"Now an argument started between them over who would be the greatest. Fully aware of the thoughts of their hearts, Jesus took a child and had him stand beside Him. Then He said, ‘Whoever welcomes this child in my Name welcomes me. And the one who welcomes me, welcomes the One who sent Me. For he who is least among you—he is the greatest.’” - Luke 9:46-48

If we want position and power in the present kingdom, let’s go ahead and pump ourselves up, tell ourselves how great we are, and ride the wave of self-confidence. Tragically, this kingdom built on pride, power, wealth, and prestige is not going to last. In the End it goes down in flames. The better alternative is to follow Jesus in humble, self-sacrifice for others, especially for the littlest and the weakest. This is the mark of greatness in God’s Kingdom, and Jesus’ question about welcoming a child still gives true insight into character.

Watch how a potential leader is open or closed to a child, not when the cameras are rolling, but when it’s just them and the little one. Then you’ll know who to trust. When the End does come, it’s only the “children” standing with Jesus, who get to reign.

LORD, on this Good Friday, crucify my pride and passion to get ahead of others. Help me to rejoice when You place others in positions of influence and recognition. And thanks, especially, for my little grandchildren who make it easy to gather them into my arms for a papa hug. Encourage all those working with children in churches. Help us all to remember that this is where Your priority lies.
